Found this pic on the army.ca website today, of the Royal Marine Commandos in the Falklands. Amazingly light kit, though those sleeeping mats would have been pretty darn cold down there, I think (also looks like they didn't roll up very tight). Still, a great, classic pic.

That was probably a fighting/survival load. If you look at an SAS patrol, they carry some HEAVY loads, because unlike the infantry, they have no support train behind them.

Makes sense. Bet those guys would have killed for a Therm-a-Rest!

BTW -- OMG, some joker has done something strange on tiny pic -- just to be clear, if you click on the Royal Marines pic, I *did* not post the *next* pic that comes up!

Now I remember why I carry handcuffs with me. Somebody try this on a trail ahead of me, with my kids leading our hike and they are going to be sorry. Call me a prude, but my kids do not need to see somebody flopping around on the trail, with a big smile on the nude-hikers face.
Maybe way back in an undeveloped area where you would not expect to be seen by other hikers, but try this on a trail where the expectation of coming across others, including kids, may end up with you having to defend yourself in court.

LOL. Guess you find the appropriate time!

I'm with Iceman. If I encounter any of those hippie dippies on the trail, they're gonna get a walking pole where a walking pole's not meant to be placed!
