I'm not familiar with the Cranberry Wilderness. Where is that?

I've been to the Cranberry a few times with Fridge as well as solo - I like the area especially for bushwhacking the old RR traces. I recognized a few of the places from your pictures.

Yeah, it's amazing some of those untreated(I assume) ties on those old grades are still intact.
Have you ever hiked in the Tea Creek Back Country there? I wanted to check that out this summer but never got a chance.

I have not hike up there yet - closest I've come is hiking the Big Beechy / Middle Fork loop from the Big Beechy trailhead but that is still in the wilderness area and not up in the Tea Creek backcountry
wrt the RR ties - they were probably chestnut logs and as a result they last a long time

Never thought about that. You're probably right!

If possible I'm heading that direction next summer.
I want to go to D.C. and hit the Smithsonian for a few weeks, and later visit some friends in Philly.
If I can get things going so that I can do this, I would like to camp and hike along the way, maybe hit parts of the AT and make it a fairly leasurely trip.
My biggest problem is that my cousin is no longer in Roanoke, VA.
So I'm going to have to find a place to camp out around D.C. or my trip is going to get rushed. I'm not going to be able to afford a motel for an extended period of time, and the Smithsonian is a real big part of why I want to visit the area again.
Oh well, life works itself out. Sooner or later I'll do it, even if I can't this summer (maybe she'll (my cousin) get transfered back).
But back to why I started this rambling diatribe. Thanks to you, now I want to visit Monongahela National Forest also.

Found out about these two *after* spending over $800 on 5 nights with the three kids at a motel in DC in April of '05. Ain't gonna do that again!
