Is there such a thing as a hammock/tent combination rig?

I spent three years in the jungles of Panama and Honduras sleeping in hammocks made of a poncho liner for the hammock and a poncho as the rain pertection. Here in AZ there are times when there may not be any trees around. I have also looked at the light backapacking site, which had me very interested in light weight backacking but I also want to be equiped to handle any situation.

SGT Rock...thanks for the site.

I've seen some, but they are darn heavy.

What I would recommend is this: Get a good hammock base like a Speer, and then have a tarp that can serve as a tarp set up on the ground with some supports like hiking poles or something so when you cannot hang, you can set up the tarp as a stand alone shelter and when you can hang, the same tarp serves as your shelter with poles.

Sarge hit that right. About the only additinal items you'd need carry might be a few extra stakes.
