Pleurotus nidulans (Claudopus nidulans) ? (aka: Phyllotopsis nidulans)
Looks similar, maybe juvenile version.

Smell?

It's some variety of oyster. I think Iceman is right - phyllotopsis nidulans.
The season is right. Does it smell bad?

totally barkless makes me suspect not an oyster.

I saw a really good new mushroom book in the bookstore. I may have to go and see if it's in there.
