View Full Version : ALICE volumes

Anyone know the volumes in cubic inches for the medium and large ALICE packs, including the external pockets? I've seen estimates for the large ranging from around 3800 ci to over 8000!

I've never measured one and really don't know how I would do it. But based on my calibrated eyeball I would guess that it is about 5500ci.

Fill it with water, then measure the water.

Thanks Iceman.
This is what I got for a large ALICE using water according to the following:

1 gallon = 231 ci
1 cup = 14.4375 ci

Main Pocket – 14 gallons = 3234
Large Middle pocket – 10 cups = 144.375
Medium pockets – 9 cups = 129.9375 x 2 = 259.875
Small pockets - 2.5 cups = 36.093 x 3 = 108.279
Total 3746.529 ci

I have been wanting to put this to use, glad it worked for someone.

why do you need to know the dam cubic inchs anyway, what don,t fit, you don,t need. Any Grunt tell you that

"that all I have to say about that"

can use styrofoam peanuts too, and then put them in a box and measure the depth, etc... might be less messy.

I should have said to use a trashbag to hold the water in the pack...

I used a trash compactor bag, the kind used as a waterproof liner inside the pack, for the main compartment and plastic bags for the smaller ones. I've modified the frame so the pack stands up. It was very easy.

Use a trash bag??? WHY???? didn't you say so the first time! I tried using water but it leaked out when I went to get my measuring Teaspoon. So I filled it again and measured very quickly. That worked (mostly) but I got my carpet all wet!!!! Oh, I feel sooo stupid. SS:captain:
PS I'm not too stupid more like slow!

You could just use mayonnaise or honey they wouldn't leak out.
