Headlamp - a light system that is fastened to a band that goes around the hiker's head. This leaves the hiker's hands free for cooking, setting up a tent, using hiking poles, etc. Headlamps have allowed some hikers to hike at night because they can be very bright, like the headlamp of a car.
On the other hand, headlamps can be annoying. Hikers wearing these things tend to look at you when addressng you. At night this can be bad because you have a headlamp right in your eyes. Some who prefer not to use lights at night develope some natural night vision, and this is the equivelent of sticking a hot poker in their eyes.
