A Sierra Mile is one that is all up hill, usually a with a gain of 1000' (300m).
I usually hike at a rate of 2.75 miles/h, averaging about 15-20 miles per day. (25 - 32 Km). However, if the day includes 10 Sierra Miles, then the mileage can drop significantly.
As such, if map indicates a distance of 10 miles, and 5 of those are steep up hill, then I figure those 5 Sierra miles = 7 miles and adjust accordingly.
