FPA = Forest Protection Area. This is the politically correct term which has replaced RUA, which = Restricted Use Area. You will generally pass a sign indicating entry into a FPA when the trail comes within 1/4 mile of an AMC hut or shelter. Except where there is no sign, of course.

Using the term in a sentence: "A hiker who finds a stealth campsite within 300 yards of the Lakes of the Crowds Hut will appreciate having a gray-colored tent rather than a yellow one, because he will be camping in a FPA and could get rousted if spotted."
