Anything in the trail such as a root, rock, dayhiker :), that causes you to stub your tow, trip, stumble, etc. and say #96&* ((see #96&*). Proper form is to point at the offending toe stobber and say "toe stobber" for the edification of those hiking with you.

Out here on the Sierra, some trails are simply cannot be ascended, rather only can be descended. However, they are toe stubbers and your toes will be jammed against your boots as you hike.
