Yesterday we lost our 15 year old Shepard mix, Dixie, to cancer. We raised her from an eight week old puppy that we rescued at the El Paso Animal Shelter. Our hearts are broken, but we know she had a great and happy life.

We love you and we'll miss you Dixie!

Sorry to hear this. I know how tough this can be.

I'm sure the loss will be felt by Bella (if memory serves), too.

I know it violates leave no trace and all - but we buried her about 50' off the BMT on our section so we could visit her when we go do trail maintenance and she could watch over our section.

Seems like an excellent place to bury her.

Sorry for you guy's loss, it's tough to lose a pet that you've had for so long.

I think that's awesome. I don't know what the "rules" are, but I've told my family to sprinkle me in the Grayson Highlands when the time comes.

My heart goes out to the whole family. I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure that your dog had a great life. Having just gone through this myself, I know how tough it is. Thanks for your kind words then and I hope y'all find comfort in the kind words from folks on this thread like I did when I lost Bittle.

I feel for you all---I lost my last cat to Katrina, and still feel it. I think y'all chose a fitting place for Dixie's last rest.

Best to you all,

I got to met Dixie back in APril, she was a sweet dog. Well, she just slept a lot, but a sweet dog nonetheless. I'm sorry for your loss, Rock Family.

I am truly sorry for your loss. There will be more furry friends, but none that can replace your loss. Til you meet again, simply remember the good times.

The Rainbow Bridge Story

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to
someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends
are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to
health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are
made whole and strong again, just as we remember them
in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small
thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who
had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when
one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His
bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly
he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass,
his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special
friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion,
never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your
face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you
look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so
long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks again to everyone for their support right now. With every passing day it is getting easier to deal with her passing, even though we still miss her terribly and probably always will, it is good to know that she's not suffering anymore.

Our other two doggie daughters, Bela and Sunny have been very clingy the last few days too. They have wanted lots of attention, which I think has been good for us too.

I would have liked to have written you all a poem Dixi, but I'm all poemed out.
I know you are all in good hands. We still hope to have our own dog some day.
In some ways I think it was easier to prepare to have children.

Sincerely wish I had had a change to meet your dog though. Hope that helps.

My condolences Dixi and Sarge. Losing a loved companion is never easy - I had the exact same situation a few years ago. It will get easier with time. Remember the fun times.

DixiCritter, we when up to the Big Fat trailhead last week (hunters everywhere so didn't hike). Stopped by on my way back and put some wildflowers on Dixie. Amazing burial spot for 'the end table'. Remember her with fondness.

Been missing you guys. Sorry to hear about Dixie. We Loved our shepard. Do you want a fun dog? Get a chocolate lab. As soon as you train her/him not to eat the house she'll love/lick you to death.

LOL... That's funny. We actually still have two very sweet and loving young dogs that we got before Dixie passed. One is now a 2 year old female Retriever mix named Sunny and the other is a 1 year old female Dachshund named Bella (whom we got as a playmate for Sunny). They have made Dixie's passing not nearly as hard as it would've been had we only had Dixie at the time. We have showered them with all kinds of love and attention, which of course they eat up.
