Rock, the boys and I have to go out of town this weekend to be with my family. My Grandmother is very ill and dying. Y'all keep us in your thoughts and prayers (if you are so inclined). It would be greatly appreciated.

We should be able to check in while we're in Alabama but I'm not promising anything at this point.

My daughter grade four teacher passed away on Sunday, after a sudden heart attack or stroke on Thursday. She was 57. Dedicated teacher. Never married. So Margaret and I took Monday off and hiked to Big Salmon River. Margaret said Miss Olsen was so looking forward to using the new Smart Board but will now not get the chance. We got a lift halfway back to the car so it was only a 15km day, but a memorable one. It was a beautiful sunny day, 20-25F, with 2-3" of the seasons first snow still on the ground. Margaret came up with the idea of spreading honey over the snow, which was very good but doesn't quite freeze like maple syrup. We called it eating snow worms. I managed to keep my feet wet and Margaret's dry, and the Bay of Fundy was clear and brisk under a North breeze sky. Saw lots of field mouse tracks, including a few shallow tunnels across the trail, as well as rabbit's and squirrel's and perhaps a fox. So we will remember this day, and Miss Olsen.

Godspeed Dixi.

The Winter Fields

WINDS here, and sleet, and frost that bites like steel.
The low bleak hill rounds under the low sky.
Naked of flock and fold the fallows lie,
Thin streaked with meagre drift. The gusts reveal
By fits the dim grey snakes of fence, that steal
Through the white dusk. The hill-foot poplars sigh,
While storm and death with winter trample by,
And the iron fields ring sharp, and blind lights reel.

Yet in the lonely ridges, wrenched with pain,
Harsh solitary hillocks, bound and dumb,
Grave glebes close-lipped beneath the scourge and chain,
Lurks hid the germ of ecstasy—the sum
Of life that waits on summer, till the rain
Whisper in April and the crocus come.

Count your blessings. My 3rd grade daughters teacher refused to speak to me
after I asked her why the kids were spending their classroom time watching TV,
& why they had no homework.

Nearly 20 years ago now - My daughter spent 5 years recovering from her
"education" (in SoCal) and is now in medical school.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the thoughts and prayers (and the dino hugs!).

My Grandmother passed away peacefully Sunday morning in the hospital with my Grandfather by her bedside holding her hand. They have been married for 74 years this year and were still very much in love with each other. Although my Grandfather didn't want her to go, he was ready for her to not be suffering anymore, so he is taking this much better than any of us expected him to take it.

Rock, the boys, and I will be heading right back down there this evening after Rock gets off work so that we can be there for the funeral tomorrow. We had to come home last night to take care of a few things here unfortunately or else we would still be there with the family.

Y'all remember us please! And thanks again!

My last surviving grandmother passed in October of '06. I didn't want her to go. But then that was rather selfish of me I suppose. Part of life.

My empathy and prayers go out for your grandmother, grandfather, you, and your whole family.

Something I wrote when someone I loved very much passed last Thanksgiving:

WOULD FOREVER BE ENOUGH?

Sing out little bird, sing your song
for all will soon be over ne’er too long.

If I could taste of the Tree of Life
would I grow bored and weary longing for the night?

Why is it we must pass on
to seek what ever dreams may come?

One wonders what could it be
that Hamlet cried out for in his philosophy?

Or is it something tremendously more
a strange foretelling of what’s in store?

It seems unjust that all things must end
there’s so little time for to life attend.

That we should laugh and cry and play
it seems carpe diem’s where we must stay.

The twelfth of never would always come too soon
Forever would never be enough to sing our tune.

Thanks again everyone for remembering us. We made it safely back home last night at almost midnight. The boys and Rock drug themselves out the door this morning for school and work... poor fellas they are so tired but if not for Rock I never would've made it through all of this... and don't tell Rock I said so, but he looks pretty good in a suit too.

Hi, Dixi-

I've not checked in for a while, so I missed all of this. I'm sorry to hear of your loss and send healing thoughts and prayers. Hey-There is a bright spot, in that SGT Rock found a job. I missed that one, too. Hubby's 2-year old temp job should convert to actual full-time employee status as soon as HR gets his background check done. It's been about 7-8 years, so it is past "about time."

Regards,

Rosaleen
