I'm looking for a camcorder for long distance hiking. Something with at least 30x zoom, will take AA batteries (or at least not rechargeable), and of course it has to be small and lightweight. Any suggestions?

We saw one at Circuit City this week that was as light as a small digital and about the same size. Try their web site. Or search small video cameras.

The double AA part troubles me, almost all digital cameras can take uhhh poor or acceptable video, but chews the batteries for lunch. I would suspect they make a video camera accept AA's, but would be concerned about the length of recordable video. I am going to guess max 15 minutes. New Lithium rechargables HOLD a charge very well when not in the item, I just picked up a couple of inexspensive internet Nokia phone batteries and charged them, a month later threw them into the phone and they worked just fine. please consider the rechargables have come a long way and will accept recording a far longer time because they store far more power. I am sure you find an ability to find a place to charge.

I would also talk with Lion King, he is very experienced in this area.

Try looking up the camcorder ratings (http://www.smartratings.com/photography/camcorders) for various brands. Some interesting selections over there.

Good luck.
