View Full Version : Osage Orange
A very odd looking and heavy fruit that looks somewhat like and an orange.
Hog On Ice
Sometimes found on large shrubs that have very wicked thorns - Osage Orange was used at one time to make a hedge row that even HOGS would not go through. There are these days domesticated varieties of Osage Orange that do not have the thorns but I think the original is a much more interesting plant. I think the wood was also once used for bows - a tough wood.
Is this one?
Thanks Rock, I tried to pull that picture over but couldn't figure out a way to do it.
DebW desrves the credit for identifying this.
Heck, I didn't know what it was.
I've seen cattle eat these things. Old timers believe if you'll throw these things under your house, it'll run the spiders and creepy things outside. Never tried it myself.
I've seen them being sold at the Farmers Market for a buck claiming to keep bugs away. There might be some truth to this.
I did some google searches, and aparently it is a documented fact that it repells bugs.
