I plan to backpack the section from Delaware Water Gap to the AT-stop railroad in New York in late July, go home, return, and do the next section I've missed, to Mt. Greylock.

I have to use a hammock; my nights of sleeping on the level are over. However, ALDHA's "Thru-hiker" guide warns of bears in New Jersey.

Is it safe to use a hammock, given their presence? My food has almost no fat: e.g., cereal, dry milk, low-fat Health Valley bars, raisins, rice and beans, soy protein, dried peas and corn. So no bear will get a whiff of fat or meat, cooking, cooked, or otherwise, from wherever I am. But a bear will get a whiff of me, for sure.

Nope, New Jersey bears see hammocks as a snack container and usually eat whatever's inside. . . messily. . .

Put swivels on each end of your hammock. This allows the bears to spin their snack around forty or fifty times :ahhhhh: and helps to get their appetite going!

Depends on which meal it is for the bear. . .
