I hate to hear that.

He sent me a Stevie Ray bootleg CD(final concert) a couple years ago just because he knew I was a fan and he didn't know me from Adam.

Rotten news.

When we hiked the GA section three years ago, he called me on the phone and we talked about things to see on that section, boy scouting and life in general. Probably talked for about an hour.

Very dedicated to the trail and scouting.

Indeed a huge loss to both organizations.

Although he didn't show it and he joked a lot about it, he was a little upset when his section was relocated. He maintained the very first part of the Approach Trail leaving the Visitor Center at Amicalola. It used to wind through a dense rhodie thicket on its way up to the old gravel road and he was happy trimming back the rhodies and building brush barricades to keep idiots from cutting off the switchbacks. His little section got a lot of traffic, not just from AT hikers but also from park visitors.

Then his section was relo'd to that long stairway beside the falls. He joked that his trail maintenance duties then consisted of only painting four blazes, two on each end of the stairs, and checking for termites.

He was the face and voice of the GATC at presentations to outside groups. He co-ordinated the GATC's activities. Many people don't know that the GATC is by far the most active outdoor club in the southeast, sponsoring multiple hikes, river trips and other events each week. He led a lot of hikes and was scheduled to lead one through the Cohuttas next month.

All that was in addition to his work with the Scouts. And the Appalachian Pages. And hammocking.

He's going to be missed.

Hell, I just got a call. I'm been asked to take one of his events scheduled for 2010.
