I just learned something this week. Home Depot offers a 10% discount to veterans. I heard this and on the off chance it was true I took my dog tags to Home Depot and they accepted that as proof.

Not that this has anything to do with hiking, but since I'm doing a bit of fixing up at my new/old house I just wish I'd known it sooner.

we give a 10% veterans discount at lowes as well.....but we require a military ID to be shown at point of purchase

I'm going to go to Franklin tomorrow to see about getting a VA I.D.. Easier then carrying around my DD214 or Honorable Discharge.

I get 10% off all my big purchases at both Lowe's and Home Depot. I don't bother with the nickel dime purchases. When I put in my new heating system it was a nice piece of change.

Gungho,
all I have is a DD-214. The reserve c enter took up my I.D. when I went to inactive reserve. (I think, happened a long time ago.) Would the DD-214 serve?

I think you need to take your DD214 to a VA center and enroll. They issue a photo I.D. which is supposed to be accepted by Home Depot and Lowes.

It'd be a lot more efficient if Lowe's would just issue the ID's.

About 4 or 5 years ago a local Vietnam vet found out that a Home Depot store some place else was offering that veteran 10% discount. He tried to get the discount in the Home Depot store in West Lebanon, NH and the store manager went from acting like it was a stupid idea to acting like the guy was crazy. I think the policy was left up to the invidual store managers. If the manager was a vet he or she allowed it. There was a store in Lancaster and Nashua that allowed it so the vet kept pushing for it with out much effect. Then word got out that Lowes gave the discount and the vets drove the extra distance to get it. So the Home Depot Store in W. Lebanon allowed the discount but only wanted to deal with it on certain large purchases. That same vet tried to get it on a JD lawn mower but it was denied. While all this was going on Lowes had a no jerk around policy allowing the veteran discount. Now the policy seems to be consistant in all the Home Depots but who cares. The jerk around Home Depot policy and know nothing staff means that I got to the Lowes in Tilton, NH...when I grocery shop at Market Basket.

I use my VA ID at Lowe's here without a prob, but this is a military town with a pretty good relationship.
