Since I've been gone awhile, I thought I would share this. It's the complete PBS show about Dick Proenneke, a man who decided to give up civilization at age 51 to live alone in Alaska.

I like the woodworking he does and when he cuts the sod pieces for the roof..... When he goes paddling all I could think was how screwed he would be if he dumped over. What a life!

I dont have a link to the follow up documentary done 25 years later when he's 75. He talks about canoeing and how being alone makes you not take chances that you might take with someone else. He said that he never once tipped in 25 years, but figured that even if he was 200 yards off shore, at 38F in the summer he wouldnt make it if he did.

I could never find any info on how he coordinated his plane resupplies. He had no radio, but about every six weeks he would get another plane of supplies and mail when the weather permitted. In the winter when the lakes were frozen, he was on his own. I know he made a fortune being the only diesel mechanic for a thousand miles in logging country, but someone had to manage the money.

There is a third part as well, Frozen North.

Neither parts are particularly about Dick. The documentarians spend time on his lakes, so they meet up with him from time to time. I must say it's strange seeing a 75 year old man that vibrant and strong just trucking along alone in Alaska.

I watched Ed Wardle's Youtube videos of his failure and crying attacks after just 50 days alone in the summer and drove home how much a frigging "MAN" Dick really was. If you want to watch them, seach "Alone in the Wild" on Youtube. Alone in the Wild vis a vis Alone in the Wilderness for Dick... It pissed me off, I must admit, that this crying poser stole Proenneke's title.

Confused yet ? me too.

Anyhow, refreshed the thread and video for viewing if nothing else.

I just watched and recorded Alone in the Wilderness part 2. It was on the local PBS station this weekend.

It is as great as the first one.
