Geo, are there any long trails down there?
The longest trail is the Te Araroa. (The Long Pathway) That stretches the length of both Islands. You get a ferry across from the North Island to the South Island. The Te Araroa trail is around 3000km (just over 1800 miles)
I've hiked the length of the North Island and that took me just over 70 days. The Te Araroa trail hadn't been fully completed at the time so my route was slightly different but off road and mainly linking existing trails or routes or making my own route. I might have kept more to the ranges I think. I 'scouted' a section in the South Island for Geoff Chapple who was the one who did a major job in establishing the Te Araroa. Also accompanied him on a section from Te Anau to Ohai when he was planning the trail route. Great guy.
So there's plenty of variety of places and distances for hiking in both Islands I guess. One of the things you have to be careful of is the weather - especially at any altitude. Being two relatively narrow land masses in the middle of the Pacific the weather can change and bite you in the butt pretty quick and some of the areas are pretty remote. Some of the bush can be a wee bit tough to bash through too, and rivers and creeks can come up fast in some places, so it pays to check any route and be prepared.
Cheers, George.

That was a set built for the movie. They built it at a spot near Erewhon in the upper reaches of the Rangitata Valley here in the South Island. It was built on Mount Sunday. (which is really not much more than a hill in the valley surrounded by higher peaks) It was reasonably accessible and had a cliff edge, and that was what they were after. I think they've removed all of the set so everything has been returned to its natural look. Haven't seen any LOR movies myself, but they seem to bring a fair swag of tourist fans down here!

Great pic's! Much of the Scottish highlands remind me of parts of the South Island down here.
Hiked through the Cairngorms, Glen Tilt, Larig Ghru etc., when I was headed for John O' Groats at the northern tip of the Scottish mainland - did that in the summer months though, so nowhere near that amount of snow! Remember seeing some large herds of deer just before Aviemore. Would like to do a bit more hiking in Scotland someday...except maybe for the midges! ;)

This goat thread reminds me of an attempted/failed family thru hike of the Juras in Switzerland, when I was 12. My parents had an idea about using a pack mule, and actually bought a Shetland pony mule for the hike. (My dad had done some backcountry pack muling in Montana in college). The homemade pack system they had built for it was not adequately tested, so under full load the mule balked after a half day of hiking due to hotspots. As I recall it did not have a proper suspension system, so the weight distribution was not all that great. We repacked about half the gear onto our own backs and set out again, but only lasted a week on the trail. If we'd made it it would be memoir worthy, but in hindsight knowing what I now know about hiking, I'm almost embarrassed at our naivitee.

I would rather camp/hike in Florida than Scotland. Usually better weather (I hope, depending on hurricane season), easier to understand the natives, more trees to hang a hammock from, Biting Gnats and mosquitos are easily overcome with appropriate bug repellent. Easier time getting there, too.

Should hit Anglesey about five days into the hike. Those pic's put some high octane in my tank. If I can get pic's half as good I'll be a happy camper.

They are pussies. When I was there the midges were supposed to be bad. There were a couple times they were bothersome, but weren't that bad if you kept moving. The slightest breeze also made them disappear. I will say that wouldn't want to camp at night, because they got really bad about dusk. I did have a day or two that the rain and cold took away some of the fun, but even then the scenery kept you going.

I've hiked a couple of miserable ridges too. About 40 years ago I was hiking in the Pecos Wilderness in New Mexico with a couple of fellows. We were taking a trail which, for a couple of miles, consisted of a series of switchbacks up a steep slope. The mountain was so steep we could brush the upper side with our elbows. the trail was about 12 inches wide and just went up and up. At one switchback turn we stopped to catch our breath. An aspen stood at the turn and we noticed a message cut into the bark. The message said,"This is the thin s--ts, ain't it!" I don't know how but we laughed for probably 5 minutes before starting back up.
