So if you were going to buy a 3-4person car camping tent and had a max budget of $200 what would you go with....
any personal favorites, i haven't had the best luck with car camping tents, mostly because i've bought the cheap ones, but thats why i'm asking here...

Ease of setup and durability is important...

Going on a roadtrip sometime this fall... we are camping our way accross to save money...

I agree with Skids -- It's hard to go wrong with Eureka! tents for car camping. You get a lot of tent for the money.

Hey, the one I posted was a Eureka!

Besides the one I posted you can stand up in and it is cheaper.

I am not as hot on that one these days. We use it for the scouts and the shock cords break easy, the poles don't hold up well, and the fabric rips easy. Well, I suppose it could be the scouts... :D Seam seal the heck out of it. They leak out of the box.

You make Scouts carry four-man tents?

Mine has never leaked once even before I seam sealed it.

save on costs. we divide and conquer. poles and fly with scout-1, tent body with scout-2, cooking gear scout-3, food scout-4. or something like that.

how old is yours? the newer ones don't seem to be as well built as the older ones.

Oh sheesh, I guess it's at least ten years old if not older.

Made it through two Horucks, several TD, and many, many camping trips.

Great tent for the money. I think it cost me $100 on sale at Bass Pro Shops.

we continually have to go back to the spare parts bag ... scouts are hard on gear... um, let me rephrase that... scouts are tough on gear

Yes!

Good 'bread and butter' tents used by the Boy Scouts for many years. If they can take the abuse of 12 yr olds on a sugar high, they can take anything! :D

I find that heavier tents meant for backpacking tend to hold up better than tents meant for car camping. And Eureka is invariably the best of this bunch.

EDIT: After reading Tin Man's horror stories, I'll just say they are they are good tents if you are NOT a 12 yr old on a sugar high. ;)

Gaiter, I have an older model Eureka Timberline 4 man you can have on long term loan if you want it. Probably want to go over the seam sealing before you take it out. Also have the annex and vestibule to go with it.

The future Mrs. Mags and I have a Tetragon 7. We tend to truck bivy more when going car camping, but the tent has served well when we use it.

I think I paid $80 for it on sale. Good car camping tent esp. for the price!

Different than backpacking, but can be fun. Esp if doing what I call 'basecamp' style trips. In areas not meant for backpacking, a basecamp is a wonderful way to to be immersed in a area. A day trip just does not cut it many times.

Set up camp, explore and watch the setting sun and then see the stars come out over a vast night sky above.

Good stuff.

From the Pawnee National Grassland. Not backpacking...but still beautiful

I can't hike for a few more weeks so camping is more my speed! Even car camping. I'm not picky as long as I can be outside.

All this talk of car camping led me to burn some midnight oil and finish the article I've been working on and off with for about a month now.

It does feature some photos of a bald EYE-talian..but it also has some photos of my considerably more attractive fiance'. :)

MORE attractive would imply that the bald EYEtalian is also somewhat attractive which we all know is not the case.
