Don't fall for the UL trap! If you are using a spreadsheet or carrying a razor blade but not a knife, you're missing the point!

I've got a spreadsheet, but I also carry one of these:

It's as sharp as a razor though.

This looks like it. Not cheap, but this price looks to be half of list from the pricing sheet on their website...

No not cheap:
http://www.smkw.com/webapp/eCommerce/products/izula/Randall%27s+Adventure%C2%AE+ESEE+Izula+Neck+Knife+-+Olive+Drab+Finish/IZULAOD.html

On Mine I've wrapped the handle with 550, looks sort of like this:
http://www.fantasyswordstoday.info/wp-content/uploads/Cutlery%20Izula.jpg

I've tried just the tiny knife, never liked it. I like a good working knife. This turned out to be one of my favorites for an LBE knife at work:

http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=ONRAT3GRNS

http://images.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/ontario/images/rat3s.jpg

I got a lot more use from something like this than my K-Bar I carried for a while. I still have my old K-Bar somewhere I need to find it and clean it up - it sort of still smelled like dead stuff, guess why. But the RAT is a great knife, I ought to pass it on to one my sons some day, especially if one of them goes into the military. That D2 steel is so hard it stays sharp over lots of use and you can give it a very shallow angle because it holds up under wear, so where you would have to go 25 Degrees for a good working knife edge, you could go 20 degrees with this.

On my Thru attempt I carried one of these:

https://www.kabar.com/product/productDetail.do?productNumber=BK11

https://www.kabar.com/images/BK11_large.jpg

I also kept this one super sharp and I've wrapped its handle too, but I never liked the bump on the hand protrusion. I don't think I paid that much for it, and mine was from when Camillus made them, not Ka-Bar, so it is a little better steel and has a kydex sheath. If anyone is interested in it, I'd be happy to sell it at a low price to a decent home.

As you might tell, I am a little bit of a knife lover. I've got a couple of knifes here that I wouldn't ever take in the woods again because they mean something to me, but they are both old working knives, no show knives here. I once got a super sweet deal on a Tom Brown Tracker:

http://www.topsknives.com/product_info.php?products_id=155

http://www.topsknives.com/images/tbt010.jpg

The most expensive knife I've ever owned and probably the most worthless - luckily it was one of those combat zone trades where I came out way in the good. I sold it on EBay last month. I'm using the money to have a knife smith make me a good working knife. UL hikers would shudder to see the weight of the thing. It takes the good parts of the RAT-3 and fixes all the problems I had with the knife. It will be the second most expensive knife I ever owned, but with the money I made selling the Tom Brown POS I'm pretty much zero balance on the cost. I just got word it is in the mail and I can't wait to get it out and play with it.

Carried a buck knife when i used to hike with a Zipp stove.
Mostly for cutting wood down to get the good, dry stuff inside for starting.

Then I carried a Ginzu for a while. Found I was only using it for cutting cheese and maybe bread and the occasional line.

Now, I found the handle of my spoon will cut the cheese, i tear the bread and use my lighter to cut line.

Do you really need a knife out there. (it is an UL thread right?) (I do still carry a single edge razor blade for emergency use)

Yep. I should've watched the youtube video in post one Jester.
Sorry.
I imagine there are people like that.
There is a guy on WB now who is asking for help condemning his friend who says he only wants to take a water bottle, blanket and sack to hold it all.
Can you imagine?

Anyway, I have been taking not much more than a camera, water bottle, handkercheif, machete, and my GPS out with me lately. I sometimes throw in a bag of chips and once took a Snickers bar.
I'm much too serious for this site I'm afraid. I keep forgetting where I am.

One of these days I'm going to have to clean out my knife collection closet. I know my wife wouldn't mind if I had a few less.

I just got my Practical Field Knife in this week and have been playing with it a couple of days. I plan to put a video review of it up soon. Maybe I'll do one on the Izula.

For long distance hikes I usually carry some sort of multi-tool. So I'll probably just use the knife on whatever one of those I take.

But I might also take my CRKT KISS. I'm not as much of a knife buff as some. I just want something that'll cut shit.
