I have been looking for some kind of critter-proof container in which to keep my food while camping. I am not talking about bear-proof, (no bears where I hike) just ant, squirrel, mouse, proof. I have been using a 1qt Nalgene but I would rather have something metal. I think a really determined squirrel could gnaw through a Nalgene.

I have tried a coffee can but have not come up with a convenient way to attach the lid (no tools, water proof, etc.). I would like some sort of aluminum container with a screw off lid about 1 qt in volume.

Anybody have any ideas?

Isn't the ursack critter proof? www.ursack.com

You might also want to check out the smaller/cheaper CritterSack. www.crittersack.com

considerable discussion about the idea was presented over on backpacking.net : link (http://www.backpacking.net/forums/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=food&Number=21212&page=&view=&sb=&o=)

Something that works for me is a paint can. You can buy them at any paint supply place, got mine at Lowes, it's light, lid can be put on as tight as you want, and has a handy dandy handle for hanging.I don't believe it would be too good for a bear bag, might slow them down a bit, but works great for small critters, can't chew through it:p

IF you go this route, make SURE you get a metal can. Alot od new pain cans are made of cardboard.
