I've only hiked a very, very small section in the Smokies, so not a lot of help with experience on the trail. The best guide I know of is the one Taba puts out:

I talked to him about it at last year's Gathring, there are still a lot of road walks, and he tried to list in his guide places like churches where they allow hikers to stay overnight on the premises which should be a big help if you are going to try and do the road sections as well.

I am a maintainer on the MST around Raleigh.

Taba is the trail's best hiker. He is currently hiking the trail the trail for the 5th time. He has made lots of contacts for hiker support in about every community. So definitely get this guidebook for his info. He is trying to adjust his info as the trail route moves from the roads to new trail.

artshikingmaps.info is also a great resource. He has detailed topos and Google Map profiles. He is currently working on making detailed illustrated maps for the Falls Lake and Eno River regions.

Parkay's maps are ok too. But the info hasn't been updated in a while last time I looked.

There is also the Allen deHarts (founder of the MST) trail guide. Its more of history book of people and towns along the trail. His route greatly differs from what hikers walk today.

All the NC state parks have good maps of official designated trail.

If you have any questions just send me a PM, I am also on WhiteBlaze under the same name.

He has hiked the MST 5 times (including a YOYO). Has written a hiker's guide in both directions.
