View Full Version : How big of tarp???
I am going hiking in two weeks in the Black hills of SD and I would like to try tarping for the first time actually hiking (not in back yard) so I want to buy a cheep tarp at wally world as the one I made from plasic sheeting and duct tape is now 90% tape and 10% plastic:D . I am wondering on size for two people with gear (basicly an empty pack; just extra clothes which are very few) I plan on using 4 mil sheeting for a ground cloth as I have a roll.
Thanks.
If it's your first time tarping, don't be too skimpy on the size. For two people and gear the smallest you'd want to go is 8 by 10 feet - I'd prefer 10 by 12. The thing is, cheap tarps don't necessarily come light. Expert minimalist tarpers have obviously gone with much less, but I strongly recommend you take enough tarp to feel secure and happy on your first tarp hike. Best of luck,
Cheers,
PKH
thanks. I know the tarps arn't light but I dont want to get silnylon yet.

I have a 6 X 8 and it is too small. I pitch it with the 6' on the ridge. This is too short and rain will blow/splash in the ends. 8 X 10 is the smallest I would recommend for one person.
