Skids,

I was thinking about that coffee making thing you had that was made out of what looked like bug mesh. So I found some scrap no-see-um stuff here are the house and made a small bag out of it. Two tablespoons of coffee makes a good 10oz mug. And it weighs 1 gram.

I think if someone wanted to make one and didn't already have scraps at the house like I do, you might want to try and find it without dyes. I don't think there will be issues, but it would probably be good to go as chemical free as possible.

You know...

This coffee bag could be reusable. Either make it with a stiff edge so it sits in your cup, somehow hanging just in the water or with a drawstring that you can open to dump the grounds, rinse and reuse the bag. Nylon cable ties run through a casing could work to stiffen the edge and one could construct it with loops that hang from a stick or the user's spoon over the cup.

I'm not real interested in carrying coffee, unless we are talking chocolate covered beans... Via is actually pretty good, just expensive.

I've heard that Costco is less expensive for VIA, but I don't have a membership and there is none close to me. I found a deal at Amazon.com and stocked up. Sometimes I can also find a deal at eBay.

Thanks, Tin Man!

The bag is totally reusable. I dump the grounds in the duff and then hang it on the outside of my pack (smells cool!) and let it dry, which it does in minutes. Or if it is raining then it gets a free rinse in rainwater. I got a mylar bag that weighs 5 grams and keeps the coffee good and fresh for about a week. So 6 grams for a coffee maker.

Hog On Ice
2012-02-06, 23:17
and 200 grams for the coffee

SGT Rock
2012-02-06, 23:32
That is about a 15 day supply.

Hog On Ice
2012-02-07, 00:03
oh - didn't really know how much you needed per day so its only 80 grams or so decreasing over the length of resupply period of about 5 or 6 days

SGT Rock
2012-02-07, 00:10
I figured it out playing with it. 10 grams is good for the first 10 ounce cup of coffee. Then you add another 5 grams to the old grounds for the second 10 ounce cup so you save on carrying extra grounds. That is about all I need on the trail, but the add 5 grams for subsequent cups should hold true. So I will carry about 15 grams of coffee per day. So really 200 grams is more like 13-14 days.

Speaking of coffee bags, has anyone ever found the foil bags that coffee comes in useful for anything, other than packing coffee? Can you use them for windscreens or anything, or are they mostly paper?

If you make them into a hat it keeps the CIA from reading your thoughts. It also makes it harder for aliens to spot you.

My trail coffee bag is a reused one of these:

Word is that the TSA are actually space aliens...always looking for new ways to probe and all. So they are more interested in the other end. :bootyshak

P.S.
The foil hat myth is a CIA trick, they actually magnify the brain wave signal.:afraid:
