View Full Version : Looking to Trade

I'm looking to trade (if I can get a good enough deal). I have a USMC issued ILBE (Molle) with DAY PACK & HYDRATION CARRIER/BLADDER. It is Designed by Arcteryx and manufactured by Propper. it is in pristine condition. No tears. No rips. No stains. No missing gear. Look it up and you will find that it is an exceptional pack. My only complaint is that, even though I can carry it, and 4 gallons of water, a tent (limelight 3p), stove, fuel, food, ECT, I'm a little tired of carrying the weight of the pack itself. I want something lighter. BTW, this pack, with everything, goes for $200+ online.

What I want is something of equal quality and lighter. Maybe you are into military gear, maybe your not. Do your research on this pack. Again, I just want something that is lighter, but of equal quality.3942

Also, here is a picture of the attachable/detachable Day Pack/Ditch Bag/Fast Pack as well as the attachable/detachable hydration bladder. Both these items attach to the main ILBE Pack. 3946394739483949

I'm not sure if it's 100% "equal quality", but would you consider an Atmos 50 (First Generation in red)? I only used it on a couple weekenders and found I needed something with more volume for longer trips.

JDBaughman
2012-04-24, 00:36
I certainly DO like the Osprey Atmos 50L... But I don't think it will have enough room for all my gear... How much weight is it rated to carry? My pack, fully loaded, weighs between 65lbs - 75lbs. Can you post pictures of it? Is there any damage to the frame? Any broken zippers? what is the difference between the 1st gen and the latest model?

I will say that I fully understand that it would probably be hard to find a pack up to the same build quality as the USMC ILBE because 1000D Cordura is pretty tough material.

JDBaughman
2012-04-24, 00:51
Tennessee River Gorge Segment. Starts at signal point then goes down to raccoon mnt, then back to signal point. About 30 miles. I know it seems like a lot, but that was a good day... Back in my USMC days, think about that, plus flak vest with e-sapi plates and a rifle with ammo... 70lbs is nothing lol

JDBaughman
2012-04-24, 01:07
I just haven't gotten to the point where I'm willing to lose some luxuries I guess... I carry my tent and all it's gear, plus my cookware (MSR Pocket Rocket, MSR Seagull Pot, GSI Halulite minimalist Pot, 8oz Fuel canister, Sea to Summit Spork), a ranger role (skivy shirt, shorts, socks), 3 gallons of water (because I don't have a filter and lost my steripen), sleeping bag, my dogs bed (poncho liner), his food (dog food), my food (mountain house), IFAK (first aid), flashlight, headlamp, Taurus 9mm (1 Magazine; gotta watch out when you start hearing the banjos), micro LED Lantern, Map of the area, and finally my luxuries; tea, hot cocoa, oatmeal, grits, honey, sugar water, ECT. 3958
I know you can't really tell, but that pack weighed 65-70 pounds. That's this past weekend.

JDBaughman

I'll get it out and see if I can get a decent picture posted. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it -- it doesn't even smell funny! I only mentioned it was a 1st Gen so you could get an idea of the look. I haven't compared it with the new ones. I also have a larger Gregory pack I will take a look at. I believe it's a "Keeler".

There's the rub.

If you want to continue carrying 65-75 lbs, it will be hard to find a lighter pack that will hold up. For instance, I have a Gregory Shasta that will handle that kind of weight and it weighs about 7 lbs empty. How much does the Molle pack weigh?

jd, lose the 3 gallons of water. that's 20 more pounds than you need to be carrying. if you are adverse to spending the money on a new steripen or filter, then check out www.geartrade.com for used/new/sellouts or just carry a few drops of bleach in a small 50mL nalgene (like a travel shampoo bottle).

Dude, I was in A/NGLICO, with crazy pack weights, (and a radio in every pack), and we never carried more than 6 quarts. When I hike now, I rarely carry more than 1-2 quarts.

Don't waste your money on a steripen. Battery life sucks. Less than a quarter of what they claim. I tried three different versions. Most water, especially springs, need no treatment. For the rest, use aqua mira drops or tablets. The tabs say 4 hours to treat, but they're safe for any thing in the States in 30 minutes or less.

Aqua Mira is a chlorine treatment, not iodine. If you overtreat your water, it might taste a touch like pool water, but there is usually no taste to speak of.

depends on what you are used to - if you drink well water or spring water you will most likely taste the Aqua Mira treatment but if you are used to drinking city water you probably won't notice the taste

Dude, Look up the specs on google. It is capable of carrying 120lbs. Think about this, at ITB (Infantry Training Battalion), marines carry 100lbs for 15 miles... the instructors make the marines carry more weight unnecessarily. That my friend, is a fact. It's always in the backpack I tote to work and everywhere else with my lunch, water bottle, raincoat, first aid kit, Rock's recommended flashlight and a few other essentials that would enable me to survive on a desert island - a Leatherman, my ipod and 8 custom made juggling balls, for example.

After the hip gizmo extended my thigh to the length it should be some muscles need stretching. I use it about 2, 3 times a day.

FWIW I always recommend changing pack last after you get your gear set and then get something that is only big enough for that gear and 5 days of food. There is a good rule of thumb out there that seems to stand: if you carry a big pack you will generally find a way to fill it up.

I've done iodine, aqua-mira, and even a filter once. Now days I just use chlorine bleach since it is cheap. And if I need to filter out tadpoles I use a woman's nylon sock.
