Why do people lie that they are thru-hiking? We ran into two guys yesterday south of Port Clinton who claimed to have started at Springer in February. They sort of looked like they could be thru-hikers, but something about them didn't feel right so I asked them their trail names (I don't usually any longer). Apparently IPod and Big Daddy have hiked a bunch, but according to their TrailJournals they just got on this year at Mr Holly Springs on April 14. WTF? Why lie? They also went on a whine about the PA rocks. We told them we didn't think they were as bad as people led you to believe. Then they whined some more. I told them wait until you get to New Hampshire. Wussies.

I met a young guy called "Red" this year. He claimed to be a, would be, thru hiker and talked about doing 30 mile days but he sleeps in until 10:30 AM. He claimed to have started in Feb. It seemed like BS to me but I didn't and don't want to waste my last 3 brain cells trying to sort out who is really attempting to thru hike.

hahaha. it took all of 30 seconds to find these guys on trail journals... all the more reason to wonder why they lied...

i was hiking down nobo into lehigh gap one day, just a day hike but had a rather full pack on, and i came across a family with 2 little girls. i had long hair covered with a bandana and 3 days worth of scruff around my goatie. one of the girls asks me if i'm "one of those hikers." i said yes, i am hiking. her father says "leave him be, he has a long way to go." i said "nah, its less than a mile to the parking lot."

the man looked at me funny. i just kept walking....

I just glanced at their TJ's. they are section hikers. IPOD has been out doing sections for 3 years it looks. So eventually they could complete the trail. They are missing that to most "thru" means doing the entire trail in one long hike.

The part 'they are missing' is that when I asked them when they started they said February and they took 11 weeks to get to PA. Whatever, I'm pretty much done talking to people who claim they are attempting a thru-hike. Some lie, some take the yellow blazes, some beg for food or water or a look at the map, some whine, etc. etc. Tired of it all. Section hikers are more interesting to talk to.

In the past few years, when I've tried to have a conversation with some thru hikers, I get attitude. Like, you're not one of us.

Not all of them. But enough to not try anymore.

hahaha not really obsessing... latest post was just in response to gungho. i have lost just about all respect for so-called thru-hikers though... which is a little troubling, since i may want to give it a go some day... but then again, i have lost all respect for myself some time ago... :D

For the record, I've grown to hate the so-called word "thru"...I mean come on, if you can take the time to walk all the way from one end of the Appalachian Trail to the other, couldn't you at least take the time to fully spell out "through"?

speaking of dogs...

I kind of like running into dogs on the trail. Their humans are another story. Dogs really need to keep their humans on a leash and train their humans to pick up or kick the dog poo into the brush. Every time I go out, I am stepping over or around dog poo right in the middle of the trail. Dogs should pay more attention to their humans and train them proper.

When I first started the trail in 2000 I was coming up a rise and there was a woman just standing there. She didn't say anything. As I approached her I could see passed her and another woman was taking a dump right on the trail. Yes...it was a dump. Fortunately I never saw them again. The beginning of the AT just has too many weird SOBs for me. It was wonderful when I learned about the BMT from you folks.

i was hiking up to devil's pulpit one day and encountered a group of teenagers. one adult was standing still cautioning the rest of the group that one of them was going poo just off the trail, couldn't go too far as not to get lost. I suggested he stop the rest of the group until she was done. he just looked at me funny. so we hiked on, past the poor girl trying to go poo not 10 feet off the trail. i smiled and said hello, kept on walking....weird.

reminds me of a time post-my boy scout days and pre-hiking as a tard...

i was playing golf with a couple of friends, the lady of the group decides she has to go and couldn't wait for the indoor facilities, so she went over a small mound along the course and squatted, barely out of site. we weren't a couple by any means, but i almost asked her to marry me on the spot

On the trail up Kilimanjaro I hiked with a Canadian girl who wasn't shy about dropping trou two feet off the trail to piss. At higher altitude you should really drink a lot of fluids, so she was going often. It didn't hurt that she was a triathlete with a killer ass. What did hurt was my wife bitch slapping me if I stared too long.
