Not sure but think I just got banned from Whiteblaze for a post on the a.t. mugging thread. I was responding to a post that I felt was not allowed by the terms of service. My post was deleted without explanation while the other post was not deleted. Feel I just got mauled by an alligator. When I last tried to view the thread I received the message "You have been removed from this discussion." Later I received a message from a gator timestamped well after my post was deleted just pointing to the user agreement. I am confused. I wonder if TD55 was also banned.

Is my experience unique?

I stick around because I enjoy the sense of freedom here. I just wish that freedom was used more often for more serious subjects. This is an exciting time for trails. They are under attack everywhere, but there are also exciting things happening. Maine has managed to finagle many millions of federal dollars to buy 18,000 acres of land and easements adjacent to the AT corridor in the High Peaks area between Saddleback and Bigelow. A coalition of groups are involved, though the projects are mostly based on 10 years of work by our Maine Appalachian Trail Land Trust (MATLT). We'll be joining in a fund drive this summer and fall to acquire the needed $700,000 in local match.

Update I did slink back and found that I was not totally banned, but only severely reprimanded and warned that one more "offense" would lead to losing my right to post. I don't have a problem with the owner, but if he agrees with the way a gator wields his power (in my opinion in a biased way) I can understand HOI not wanting to encourage the owner by helping him profit by upping traffic and thus rewarding his bottom line. I have decided to take a self imposed sabbatical and maybe check back later to see if anything has changed. I fully understand that nobody cares, and I support his right to run his site as he wishes.

nufsaid.
"Finagling" may not have been the best verb to use. I was trying to imply that this was not an easy effort. That we had spent years putting the deal together. First we had to convince the conservationist world that there was still something of value that deserved protection. All the leading groups had written off the High Peaks as worthless because they included Maine's two largest ski areas, Sugarloaf and Saddleback. We knew differently because we were founded by hikers, not armchair environmentalists.

Our founding goal a decade ago was to provide buffers for the narrow trail corridor through Maine because the paper companies that owned most of the land had sold almost all their holdings to developers and land speculators. The High Peaks became our priority because the area was obviously most threatened because of the magnitude of existing development.

First we had to find willing sellers of land that met the criteria of the forest legacy program, which was started during the Reagan administration. And they had to be persuaded to sell at a price that wouldn't exceed the stiff federal land appraisal standards. Then came working with local people, hikers, snowmobilers, ATVers, and town officials, whose support was critical to gain the support of Maine's Congressional delegation.

Because we are a new group without a history of successful fundraising we found partners among the nearby towns, land trusts, and other organizations. Finally, after almost a decade of effort, it has all come together. These will be truly great acquisitions, protecting miles of high mountain ridge line and a beautiful stream, 150 miles from the ocean, but which remarkably still attracts annual spawnng runs by endangered Atlantic salmon.
