Last night I made this while trying to get ready to start night shifts. I've been contemplating one of these for a couple of years, and Lawson had some 0.75 cuben fiber on clearance (hence the lovely color) so I finally got some and knocked it out. The hammock without the suspension is 112.3 grams or 3.96 ounces, and with my minimalist suspension it comes up to 171.7 grams or 6.06 ounces. It hasn't hit the woods yet. This first hang was just to see if the thing would hold.

I can't sleep in a hammock so I don't have a dog in this fight but that is ridiculously light.

I gotta start getting serious about cuben.

We will see how well it holds up.

Sarge,
can you make me one?

I can't be sure from your pics but did you use end channels to attach the suspension and is so did you use bonding tape/glue?

Never mind. I see it in the schematic.

I'd rather not. My wife gets mad at me when I do cuben projects because of the smell of the primer. It would cost about $60 for cuben, but then the price of the primer and tape would increase the price quite a bit. I still have a bunch of primer, but I used up the very last of my tape on this project. I actually could have used about 4" more to finish it right.

The Cuben hammock died a violent death 0100 Saturday morning. We will mourn its passing.

How was the landing?

Not too bad, I had a warning of the impending doom and had a chance to get my feet set.

OK. Losing the hammock is bad enough, but at least it was the only injury.

How was the landing?

The Russian judge only gave him a 3.5

What gave way? The fabric, the suspension?

SGT Rock

Fabric. I got up at about 0100 to go to the bathroom. When I got back in I was sliding around trying to get back in the sweet spot and heard a small "pop". I felt under me to see if I could find the source of the sound but wasn't sure on anything. I started to go back to sleep and heard a louder "POP" and then felt my shoulders in the air - the fabric directly under my shoulders had split along the width of the hammock.

At this point I realized I was lying in a ticking time-bomb. So I gently swung my legs around to get out when "BOOM", the last of the fabric went and I landed on my feet and butt simultaneously. I then went and slept cowboy with a very expensive ground cloth.

Well, bummer! A couple of friends had similar issues with silk hammocks.

A new question for you. I'm looking at adding a "head pocket" similar to the foot pocket on this cuben hammock. You have it set up to be detachable, which allows for sitting on that side as well as less stress on the edge as one enters and exits. Zing-it is overkill, but I'm thinking that incorporating a UCR to draw up the pocket might be an easy way to set it up and release it from inside the hammock.

Any thoughts on this before I proceed?

might work - I tried a bunch of things for the head pocket before I gave up on the idea but I never tried a UCR - you might want to review some of the posts on the other thread starting about: http://hikinghq.net/forum/showthread.php?6784-Ghost-Hammock-DIY-ultralight-hammock&p=298636#post298636

Thanks, HOI!

I have some other line and lineloks that I might try instead of the UCR, just to save some time. Will look at the other thread. I will definitely keep the end free.

Thanks, SGT Rock!

I've watched the video a couple of times. I might thread in some 200 lb test dacron line through the side hem, add a loop to the side of the hammock, and a fixed line on a small arrow shaft toggle to close up the added pocket piece. I'm in a bit of a time crunch, so hope to do this before a trip this week. I may take one from my "Hennessy collection" which I know will give me no trouble, but was hoping to shave some more weight to save a sore knee.

The two curtain lines are adjustable, HOI knows the knots. For a toggle I've just used a button.

So you're saying you didn't give up the ghost on Halloween?
Surprisingly no. I think all bar gates have been open for the last 4 months.

FWIW, the hammock here is weighing in at 5.13oz and has held up for nearly 2 years although I'm not getting the nights out during that time like I was in the previous years. So that makes it about 1.17 ounces heavier than the cuben hammock that failed.
