I've long been a critic of cell phone intrusion into wild places. I go to the woods and mountains to escape the trappings of civilization, a place where one is on ones own and must rely on oneself for safety when surprises occur. The new knowledge that almost all fellow hikers are likely to carry a device that merely by asking I can reach 911 surely intrudes on that sense of wildness.

The Consumers Report which came to my mail box today, suggests that even those who carry may be missing a lot of what wildness has to offer. It tells of research at the University of Western Washington in which researchers hired a clown dressed in yellow and purple to ride a unicycle up and down a busy walkway. They then asked everyone they saw using a cell phone if they had seen anything unusual recently. Only 8 percent had.

Then there was that Stony Brook University study that reported in January that folks cell phoning and texting tended to walk zig sag paths. The report came out a few weeks before a California man texted his way into the arms of a black bear.

Do you reckon folks worried about such thing when other folks started carrying flashlight. Surely they intrude more then a cell phone...

Well, I can tell you from experience that my daughter got necessary medical attention this week because she fell and struck her head on a rock and needed stitches.

My phone got her to the hospital in the fastest way possible, but still took six hours to get her off the mountain and to the hospital.

So I really don't give a rip about the study you posted.

My daughter is more important than your lack of intrusion.

It bazaar to me how so many still cling to the purist, Wingnut nonsense of the trail and hiking.

I think you all know - I hike with a cell phone, but it is off and in my pack. There for emergencies. It does drive me a bit crazy for people to be constantly gabbing, texting, or surfing on them while in the woods.

If somebody is yakking or texting and walks off a cliff - too bad they're not paying attention to their environment.

If you carry a cell phone in case of emergency it's no different than carrying a whistle or a mirror.

I was thinking about making a narrow trail vehicle that could be pulled by a bunch of dogs ...like a dog sled. I don't remember any rules to prevent that? I don't pack human or dog poop by the way.

Y'all are all missing two important points.

The first point is why should it be considered unusual to see a clown dressed in yellow and purple riding a unicycle on a busy walkway at the University of Western Washington?

I have many friends who are clowns and I find the study's assumptions to be prejudicial and offensive. The study clearly discriminates against clowns. Can't we all just get along?

And the second point is where in hell is UWW anyway?

Maybe you can get Jesse Jackson to take up your cause. Cause he doesn't seem like he does much more than play the clown himself. Just sayin.

Kids eating lunch don't notice everything in their environment either. Is food another unneeded distraction in the wilderness?

Tex carried one on the CDT but he carried a cell on the AT. HOI is right...it's all about seeing clear sky for the SAT phone. This time of year you may have trouble finding clear sky.

I only need to check in once a day. If Verizon will do for that section, I will not rent a sat phone. In NH, sat phone was my only reliable option.

The one I rent is $4/min. Losing a contract customer is not an option, but maybe Verizon will be fine through there.

If I got a signal at the house, I could see getting a cell phone. What I don't understand is how people remember to charge the thing. Is it second nature after a bit?

Come home and plug it in every day type of thing?

Mine charges while I sleep. When I wake up at 430am, I use my cell to check for superman, check email, surf for sports scores, check news, check Facebook, play sudoko etc, all from my phone. When my cell phone alarm goes off at 545, I check again, then do my thing all day, using my cell to place calls, log miles, use GPS, track my business, respond to clients, process credit cards with a swiper, etc etc. etc. Cell phones are a great tool if you take to time to explore. I am always finding new ways to use mine to save time, waste time and have fun.
