Clearly the guy had never thrown or seen a live grenade in action.

We were always taught to throw pretty much as hard as you could and still get down for cover because you might still be within shrapnel range. Throwing grenades is always a bit hairy. Dropping a grenade? Ignorance of the worst kind.

But as long as both men walked away, it was also pretty funny.

Yes I know this is dead, (Cuffs) but I'm gonna bring it up!

One time at the range, saw this guy throw his grenade AFTER he had already started to hit the deck... It bounced off the top of the barrier wall and rolled down the other side... The range guy, (grenade instructor, whatever they are called) pulled him out of the pit and jumped on top of him... Talk about a close call... Had he just thrown it a little later... Whew...

One of my uncles duties included the hand grenade range at Parris Island. That was in the 1950s after he came back from the Chosin Reservoir. He only talked about the Chosin Reservoir when he was drunk but he always had a good story about some of the dumb shit that happened on the hand grenade range.
