View Full Version : Trail guide idea - need feedback

I'm posting this here because I want a little wider feedback. I'm working on a new guidebook and sort of hit on an idea that I think may work well and could end up getting retrofitted into the next version of the BMT guide when I do it for 2014.

In an attempt to de-clutter the listings but still provide good information, I've hit on a hybrid idea (it ain't an original thought). On some trails you hit a water source often, and you don't really need to know the exact mileage to every one of them because listing them all would be too redundant. But it is also nice to know where you are going to get your feet wet or could find water. So I've added a water symbol along the trail terrain profile where the trail crosses that water source. I've used the Eagle Creek Trail as a test trail for this concept. I've also added tic marks (HOI's good idea) to the profile to mark off miles yet keep the profile less cluttered.

If you have the time and the inclination, take a look and tell me what you think. Be brutally honest.

Looks like a good idea. Any chance the "water mark" could be blue?

It's expensive. But that said, given what we expect this guidebook to be used for, we have been contemplating that.

I'm not sure when but I plan to re-hike the BMT again. I will be needing a new book when you get it all sorted out.

The shrinks try to act as if they just invented PTSD. During WWII they had it figured that the average person could stand 250 days of combat. Combat is defined as that time where you are in iminent risk of being killed or wounded. It is not a question of how many bad guys there are or in what way you would be harmed. I knew a Marine who was meivaced to the states after one island amphibious assault. He's carried a tremendous guilt for only being able to do one assault. It boggled his mind that I'd made over 25 air assaults in one month. The doctors had it worked out a lot better in WWII than they do now.

Subject: Muslim Dilemma

Everyone seems to be wondering why Muslim
Terrorists are so quick to commit suicide.
Lets have a look at the evidence:
- No Christmas
- No television
-No nude women
- No football
- No pork chops
- No hot dogs
- No burgers
- No beer
- No bacon
- Rags for clothes
- Towels for hats
- Constant wailing from some idiot in a tower
- More than one wife
More than one mother in law
- You can't shave
- Your wife can't shave
- You can't wash off the smell of donkey
- You cook over burning camel shit
- Your wife is picked by someone else for you
- and your wife smells worse than your donkey
Then they tell you that "when you die, it all gets better"??
Well no shit Sherlock!....
It's not like it could get much worse

I looked at the pdf. I thinks its brilliant. Definitely worth showing those in between water sources. It's good to know when you might skimp a little on water and when you really can't. It's easy to get lulled into a sense of security in some sections. Of course there are seasonal variations also, but your graphic says a lot with a little.

...as opposed to the chain restaurant artery clogging crap. Daisy and I had gone to this diner in West Lebanon, NH that was the poster diner for a greasy spoon place. Everything on the menu was white flower and grease....plus it allowed smoking. We put it on our list of places to not go back to. Time passed and Hiker Head and J5man were in the area and ate at the 4 Aces Diner. They didn't say it was great but they weren't repulsed by the place. Recently Dasiy and I had some tire work done on her car next door so we went back. It was like a different place. New people had bought it. They got rid of the layer of dirt and grease on everything. They changed the menu to include whole grain breads. They cut way back on the grease in the menu. The coffee was good...not quite as strong as Daisy likes it but that would be too much to expect. The waitresses were excellent and the prices were reasonable. The Four Aces is back on our places to go list. If it weren't for a couple hobos stopping there we probably would not have gone back there. Thanks guys.

I fish at night and put a light in the water about 15 ft. down. The smelt are attracted to the fresh water shrimp that swarm the light. You use a rod about as big around as a piece of spaghetti. On a good night you can catch them one right after another. We keep some alive for lake trout bait. We eat the rest. It is a lot of fun.

I once picked up a hitchhiker on Rt 95. He asked where I was from. I told him that I lived in Providence, RI, but was born in Ohio. He said: "I knew you were a Mid-Westerner...none of these @#%*& Yankees would stop and give me a ride!"

I guess the Rhode Island influence is only on the surface.
