BLUE RIDGE, GA (WRCB) -- After biting and spitting at people, a llama in Morganton, Georgia has tested positive for rabies.
Four people have been in contact with the llama. The Fannin County Environmental Health officials recommend all four immediately seek medical advice from their healthcare provider and consult with the Georgia Poison Control Center to determine the extent of their exposure.

Shannon Bradburn,an Environmental Health Specialist, was contacted by the Ocoee Animal Hospital in Blue Ridge on January 4 stating that a llama specimen had confirmed positive for the rabies virus.

Bradburn said the veterinarian had been called to the property on Elrod Road in Morganton, GA in late December because the animal had exhibited signs of aggression, loss of motor skills, biting itself, biting people and spitting at caretakers.
The veterinarian euthanized the llama and collected the specimen for the testing that was subsequently performed by the two labs.

The caretaker who was spat on by the llama is receiving post-exposure rabies treatment.

Rabies is almost always deadly in humans who contract it and do not receive treatment. People must recognize the exposure and promptly get appropriate medical treatment before developing rabies symptoms.

Health officials urge residents to protect against rabies by maintaining rabies vaccinations in their pets and livestock.

For more information about rabies and its prevention, call Fannin County Environmental Health at (706) 632-3024 or log onto the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website (http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/).

I just got back from a walk. Followed some big bobcat tracks for more than a mile. Glad he didn't jump me.

Noon news reports affirm that the bobcat's post-mortem testing came back positive for rabies. Makes me a bit uncomfortable about hiking local trails alone. We had a rabid skunk in our yard this past summer. Animal control took care of that one, but along with rabid foxes seen within 10 or so miles, we need to be concerned about the infection spreading. I've never been into carrying for personal protection while hiking, but I just might be ready to change my mind...

My wifes uncle went through rabies treatment after entering an abandoned warehouse he owned
and had a rabid bat bite him. Series of shots in the abdomen , that was 5-6 years ago.

In the late 80s I was sent to a local ER for a suspicious injury investigation (common here). Seems our rocket scientist had seen a Bobcat go into his outhouse (we often get LA folk buying mountain cabins to get away from it all) and put a board on the door to trap it. Then, after getting someone to hold his beer ;), decided to catch it with a gunny sack. That 50 lb kitty ate his lunch...impressive damage.

I've got a stuffed bobcat in my living room that I inherited from my granddad. I'd hate to run into a live one.

no big deal running into a bobcat on the trail - its like the typical bear sighting - by the time you get the camera out its long gone

Some time around 1960 I went on a hike with my Boy Scouts patrol. We found a dead coyote in the bar ditch and, naturally, spent a while trying to remove it's ears for the bounty. One kids Mom freaked out over this and we all had to have rabies shots; IIRC 15 shots in the thighs or abdomen, save one kid who had the good sense to convulse after the first. Made me wish I could convulse!

LMAO, some guys claimed to have been maybe bit by a radid dog to get out of field duty in Vietnam. They had to get shots in the abdomen for 15 days. They never pulled that shit again.

BTW, we never did get that coyotes ears off. The couple of kids with knives hadn't ever learned to sharpen them.
