It looks like a long walk down to get a drink of water.

It was about 1,000'. Luckily we brought water up with us.

What altitude did you get to?

That pass was about 8,900'. I think the highest we ever got was 9,000'. I could feel the difference the first few days.

I've always found it amazing how Ennio Morricone's music sets a scene in your mind. Good choice!

Last time I was anywhere that high was in Peru on a trip to the Valle Sagrada (sp?). We drove to several villages where I would see an altitude sign in meters and I would have to try to calculate altitude in feet in my mind. I was in a minivan and couldn't reach my pencil and paper. I think we got up to 10,500 feet (very rough estimate). What I remember best was standing in one place and having to breath as deeply and as fast as I could to stay upright. We had flown in from the coast a couple days earlier.

I got high in Peru. Did a part of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the highest part of that was Warmiwañusqa (Dead Woman's Pass) at 13,829 ft. It wasn't the altitude, it was chewing the coca leaves.
