I am looking for a pettern for down pants. I want to be as simple as possible. Hiking here in Alaska temperatures can drop as much as 40 to 50 degrees in one day in the mountains. I have yet to find reasonablly priced down pants. I have found serviceable down jackets for under 50 dollars but all the pants come in around 150 to 200 dollars and they have too many doodads. Something that is simple and very stuffable would be nice. If anybody else has questions about pattersn this would be agreat place to post them.

I know it not the same thing but Cabelas(sp?) has down long underwear tops and bottoms and a good price.

Thru-Hiker has a pattern for windbreaker pants that sound pretty good - if you made two pair of them - one to fit (the inside) and another a size or two larger for the shell - you would be pretty close. They are also pretty good with advice on making stuff, do a lot with down (quilts, bags etc.) and also carry 800 fill down, 0.8 oz fabric etc.

Good luck with your rproject - sounds interesting.

The above pants-in-pants idea sounds good. The Kobuk from Nunatak seems to be just that.

Maybe there's no need to make the full length of the legs down-filled. Would it be more clever to have a more durable over-the-boot lower part without the down filling?
