View Full Version : My latest survival kit

This is my latest, and hopefully, my last iteration on a survival kit. It all fits into a small fanny pack and stays in my car. Whenever I go hiking...even on trails...I grab this one and strap it on.

I've tested the kit twice in the field on 1-day and 2-day stays. I was famished after the 2-day (no fish), but ok otherwise. I've changed the contents of my kit several times over the years, and this one now has everything I found that I needed, and I've eliminated the things I did not use.

Here's the list for the 1 lb 11oz kit (picture attached):

1. Water purification tablets (6)
2. Water filter straw (Frontier brand from Campmore)
3. 1-gallon plastic water bag
4. Sip tube for water bag (saves a LOT of spillage)
5. Storm-proof matches in sealed plastic
6. Vaseline soaked cotton balls
7. Fire starter tabs (4)
8. Flint match
9. Candle in tin foil
10. Plastic mirror (signaling, examining wounds you can’t see, finding that nasty speck in your eye)
11. Neosporin
12. Energy bar
13. 50’ Para cord
14. Hand saw
15. Survival blanket
16. 8’ Square plastic sheet (shelter)
17. 5’ Duct tape
18. Compass
19. Small Leatherman tool
20. Xacto knife
21. 10’ Snare wire
22. 50’ Fishing line & hooks wrapped on a nail (that nail WILL come in handy!)
23. Small flashlight (press-to-activate type)
24. Kit contents list (always know exactly what you have on hand)

Happy Hiking!
Ed

Nice list! My survival list is much shorter, heavier, but definitely good for a day, and maybe some into the next day...

Never underestimate what wonders can be accomplished with the proper application of a quarter ounce of C4, either.

I'd add an ounce of Chlorox...at roughly 29.57ml/ounce and 15 drops/ml that would be 435 drops, at 2 drops per 'serving' 217 quarts of treated water.
If you want protein forever (OK that's an exaggeration) have an adjacent pouch with 10 of the good stainless steel/plastic rat traps and an ounce of
peanut butter :)
These are squirrel catching machines (I add 14-16 inches of aircraft cable to the corner with a fixed loop, and a fix loop on the free end to stake down)....

What? You mean a survival kit should have more than a cell phone in it?!

Kinda sorta on topic...

I have a business trip survival kit of a small but bright flashlight, first aid kit in a small ziplock with bandaids, antiseptic wipes, ace bandage, Tylenol and anti-diarrhea meds and a small sewing kit swiped from some hotel. Plus a small wrap of duct tape, a Sharpie pen, ear plugs and a nylon shopping bag with a couple folded gallon sized ziplocks.

That kinda goes with me everywhere since I keep it in the daypack I shuttle to and from work.

I guess the aluminum water bottle, bottle opener, a French Press with my own coffee and a plastic spoon all count as travel survival items too.

If I'm checking luggage I'll also have a lighter, multi-tool and a pocket knife.

In my juggling prop bag I have a different survival kit with fingernail scissors, emory boards, bandaids, first aid tape and talcum powder.

wtf I would have thought climber chalk would give you a better gripTrouble is in club passing the catch and throws are made from different points. Catches are made closer to the bell while the throwing position is near the knob. So the club needs to slip down after the catch. Humidity and sweaty hands cause inconsistent throws. Or in my case, even more inconsistent.

Cue balls that jugglers use.

The powder happens naturally over time.

Some good suggestions there, gang. I usually clip a water bottle to my belt to have a ready supply. The Scotch kinda makes you forget about everything else. Oh...and I really like the squirrel traps...and the C4 (hard to come by tho) :0
