If a link to this blog entry were put in the whiteblaze "Trail Running and Speed Hiking" Forum, I wonder how long it would take for them to realize it shouldn't be there. Or maybe it SHOULD be there?

The folks over there and I have had a few recent disagreements about straight line (and straightforward) thinking, which is why I'm hanging out here. (self imposed)

Just checked over there. A couple of funny responses, from people who understand the spirit of the thing.

a bipartisan speed lunch commission has been set up to keep the politics out of speed lunching.

Were the competetors tested for performance/appetite enhancing drugs? It would be a shame if years from now we had to add an asterisk next to this record.

Someone did a study recently (sorry I can't give a reference) which looked at effects of spices in a meal. Two similar meals were prepared, one with all the spices used to make curried chicken; the other also was curried chicken but without the spices. Both were high fat, high carb meals. Again, they differed only in the presence or absence of the spices. 40 people were served the meals and blood work was drawn after they ate. The people who ate the spice free meal had significantly higher blood insulin and blood triglyceride levels than those who ate the standard chicken curry. It appears spices may have previously undisclosed metabolic effects.

Not too much of a surprise. Indian spices contain a lot of bioactive chemicals: curcumin (and other curcuminoids), piperine, piperidine, capsaicin, allicin, allyl isothiocyanate, the list goes on and on.

I make dal bhaat tarkari on the trail because I like it, not for any purported health benefits. But it's nice to know that someone thinks it's good for me. Most people just complain that the inevitable aftereffects stink up the shelters.

I would like to see the experiment repeated, except remove the spices and instead study the effect of a couple of shots of Jim Bean with the meal.

Okay. Now we're back on track. How the hell did this get derailed into a discussion about the medicinal value of herbs & spices? You people are loopy.

Salt

Daisy and I have decided that when we order in restaurants to ask for no spices added. They seem to pile on the salt and sugar these days. I'm diabetic and Daisy is ...um....er...kind of bitchy with a side that's prone to violence.

My wife's like that too. I attribute it to a genetic lack of "Y" chromosomal material.

On a related (well, loosely related) subject; some here may remember a year or two ago I posted a note saying marijuana use was IIRC harder on the lungs than tobacco use. Someone here (Don't remember who and don't want to take the time to look it up) responded vociferously that I was wrong, damned wrong! Well, now a controlled study has been conducted which shows I was right.

the proportions are misleading. i would say the average smoker smokes easily 5 times more cigarettes per day than the average pothead.one cigarette vs one joint?and the emphysema factor is somewhat curious.its a flawed study.

a second study also showed that eating a full bag of crunchy cheese doodles within 2 hours of inhaling marijuana negated any negative effects of the smoke.
bacon works too.

I have a friend in California who is one of the few medical marijuana permit holders who actually has a valid need for the drug (stage 3 lung cancer). He buys marijuana "cookies" from his dispensary, no smoking needed. They come professionaly packaged in a bag that looks just like the high end hippy granolas at wholefoods.

He also wants people to spread the word that 80% of new lung cancer cases occur in NON-smokers. He was only 30 when diagnosed and testing later showed he carrys a gene that maked it extremely likely that he would develop lung cancer in his lifetime.

The fourth study warned about the deadly strain of marijuana proven to be 60x more powerful than any other variety.

Many users have died from asphyxiation due to uncontrollable laughter.

If you or any friends have not had your stash tested you should immediately send a sizeable sample to:

PO Box 1597
Cumming, GA 30040.
