I heard that Winton sold the store to a new owner. No details but it may be in for some changes.

assuming there was no hitch, it was supposed to be finalized on Nov. 1.

as opposed to newbies with zero miles buying their shit based upon the experts at REI. Razor spends most of his time picking up cast off Walmart shit found along the trail and at shelters, so perhaps they don't all buy from REI.

In 2000 my younger son started the AT with me. We had spent the winter buying gear. My son kept insisting on all the heaviest stuff insisting that he was young and strong enough to handle it. We did our first 30 miles and my son started talking to the salesman while I went to take a shower. When we grabbed our gear to move on I notice my son had new Leki hiking sticks. Then I realize he had a new pack. He'd bought hundreds of dollars worth of new gear all in the time it took me to shower. He went home from Gatlinburg (sore knees) and we sorted through his and my gear and I hiked on with the best stuff. Basically I hiked away with all the gear my son had bought at Waliscyi and it all seemed lighter than my old stuff. The more I hiked with it the better I liked it in spite of being the king of the cheap guys. I wound up paying for all that gear...surprise, surprise.

I just wish I could get hooked up with the old gear to equip kids that have none.

I imagine if there was a "donation bin" for BSA that some hikers would chose not to mail their old stuff back home. Maybe the new owner would be agreeable?

I imagine if there was a "donation bin" for BSA that some hikers would chose not to mail their old stuff back home. Maybe the new owner would be agreeable? There's an idea. And there's enough folk on here that live close enough to collect it when the bin's full and get it to a good home.

I outfitted a Scout patrol with cooking stuff left at Woods Hole shelter - spatulas, big slotted spoons, ladles, stuff like that. But then again I've collected a couple or four abandoned tents off the GA AT and none were worth keeping.

Not so much as tents as cook gear, backpacks, stoves, etc

Hey MB, I've got an REI pack I'll send you. I bought a new one and that put me up to three. I like having an extra around, but don't think I need three.

How are you on sleeping bags? I've got a bag with pad also that I'd donate.

Packs and sleeping bags are definitely more needed than cookware....

You have my address still?
