I went to the Annual Texas Hammock Hang this weekend. I saw a bunch of young whipper snappers there and had to educate them as to how things were Back In The Day when all trails were uphill and it was winter 9 months out of the year.

We didn't have fancy hammocks and quilts back then. Everybody carried an 8 foot length of chain link fence and used a roll of baling wire to hang it between two trees, then we wrapped ourselves in burlap.

We didn't have any fancy canister or alkyhol stoves. We just plunged our hands into the fireplace at home and grabbed a hot coal out of it before we left and carried it with us till we could make a campfire.

We didn't have any fancy water filters. We all had kids when we were 15 years old and disposable diapers hadn't been invented yet, so we used cloth diapers. We just grabbed us a diaper and squeezed water through it. If we happened to grab a diaper out of the dirty pile, why we just made believe we were drinking lemonade or chocolate milk.

And we didn't have no fancy GeePeeEss to tell us where we were. We carried a Ouija board, and if we didn't get an answer right away, we'd kill one of the noobs in the party and wait till he could tell us. That's how I ended up with all this vintage gear.

I don't recall fancy freeze dried dinners. We used to make trail biscuits from spit and dirt.

Didn't cook 'em in no plastic bags neither. We wore corduroy trousers and rubbed them against our thighs until they were cooked.

You had burlap?? I would have killed for burlap. But I was grateful for what I had.

You say that like it's a hard thing or something. I still do that as many witnesses here can attest.

But first I have to invoke the words of my personal good luck charm: "Hey Skids, hold my beer."

Back in the day, we didn't carry fancy First Aid Kits. We carried a bag full of moldy bread. If we got sick, we'd catch a rattlesnake and stuff the moldy bread down his throat. We'd wait a couple minutes, then let the snake bite us, and with all that moldy bread in him, we'd be injected with penicillin instead of poison. If we broke a leg or cut off an arm, we just got a new trail name like Stumpy or Lefty.
