I found something while roaming the net today. It's a miniature map holder with built in magnification. Has someone tried one of these?

If they work then all of my maps could be packed into one tiny package, along with a bunch of infopages too.

That would be cool. I was looking into doing something similar with a PDA since you can already get digital maps.

Gadgets are fun, but in some cases it's nice to know that this will work even without batteries. The price of this thing is quite affordable too.
There's a bit of safety in having the maps on two media, and the PDA idea is a good one. Too bad the gps-units that hook up to them are so expensive.

I bought DeLorme Street Atlas for my iPaq. I like it alot, but I don't think I'd take it on the trail. It's great for getting to the trailhead, but the batteries wouldn't last long enough. I'd prolly go with one of the new Magellans.
Peace,
Joe

I got a AA battery re-charging unit for my Zire so I could use it in the field. I haven't put any topo software on it yet.

My iPaq uses a lithium ion battery. Prolly not worth carrying an extra one for those week long trips. I was reading some of the reviews on backpackergeartest on the new magellans. They sound pretty cool.
Peace,
Joe

I like the Delorme TopoZone program for my laptop -- $99 for the CDs, and $99 for the GPS. As far as tiny maps, I hope they're wateproof, because if the ink ran, you'd be screwed.

The micromaps are apparently waterproof. ...and they won't be blowing around much during viewing either.

now if they would build a compass into their viewer they just might have a product to interest me

HOI, that's a logical combination. Wonder why nobody thought of it before?
