Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers helped a family of six to safety after they got lost hiking Mt. LeConte. The Louisiana family with children, ages 4, 5, 10, and 12, spent the night on a trial in below freezing temperatures. In a press release, rangers said the family started the hike up to Mt. LeConte at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on the Rainbow Falls Trail. The Pigeon Forge Police Department received a 911 call from the family requesting help, but the call dropped before an exact location could be determined.

Park rangers found the family on the Bull Head Trail around 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Rangers helped the family to the summit of Mt. LeConte where LeConte Lodge staff cared for the exhausted hikers. The staff provided them with dry clothes and food. Overnight, temperatures dipped as low as 28 degrees on Mt. LeConte.

"We are grateful the family stayed on the trail allowing us the best chance to find them quickly," said Acting Chief Ranger Steve Kloster. "We take this opportunity to remind everyone to make sure they are prepared before they set out for a hike by understanding the terrain, distance, and weather conditions."

The park suggests always packing water, clothing, food, and a flashlight so that you are prepared for the unexpected

Sort of reminds me of that guy and his sons that dies on a day hike in Arkansas a few years back. Thank God they made it out OK.

Wow, I'm shocked that they made it from Rainbow over to Bullhead. 2:30 start time tells me they had no clue what they were getting into

Exactly what I did in Scotland- as did almost everyone else. Only saw 2 people setting up camp. There were few places to camp, and the midges would have forced you into your tent before dark. Not sure you could have kept them out.

most of us are ok with midget. some are midges, but thats a generational thing. Its those politically correct people who want everyone to be the same that insist on "little people." I may be short, but I aint "little."
