View Full Version : Campsite at 107.1?

The 2011 Thru Hikers' Guide shows a campsite at mile 107.1 but the 2014-15 edition does not. Is there no longer a campsite there?

The 2014 AT Guide shows a campsite at 110.1.
The 2015 THC shows a campsite at 110.7.

The trail changes from year to year due to relocations, etc. Minor mileage changes should be expected...
Who's doing the mileage, the source of the figures, may have some effect on the reported data.

What Dzierzak says is partially right, but with this particular campsite, if it is the one I am thinking of, it was washed away a couple years back and then weeds are growing up where it was.

Another question...

Hiking SOBO, there aren't any campsites between mile 119.1 and 105.7 except some pay sites. I can't find any info online about these sites. Does the BMT go right by these? If I don't make it to 105.7, is it easy to find disbursed camping around Reliance?

I forgive you :).

Seriously, I just need some reassurance that I'll find a safe place to camp if it's too hot and I can't make the miles.

there is a small site on lost creek at 105.8.you can also camp at reliance fly and tackle for a small fee, although its .9 off the trail.

Thanks HB, I'm just a little worried about the heat and trying to hike 13.5 mi through that section. It looks like a large chunk of that section is close to town and roads which makes me uncomfortable. Is CS 105.8 the one near the boulders that you recommended last year?

Yup.would have stayed there if it wasn't pouring.

Looking at my current guide I'll guess you are using an older version. So let me throw out some ideas based on what version you do have (2011 version maybe?). First off, between my first and second guide I had feedback that people couldn't find some campsites I listed or places I mentioned you could hike which baffled me. So talking to them what I found was a consistency with them was they were looking for a fire ring when I said their was a campsite. So I took out any campsite I was listing that didn't already have a fire ring. So just because I don't list a campsite doesn't mean the potential doesn't exist. All of this I am writing about it S=NoBo since that is the way I generally think of the trail.

105.7 Campsite at lost creek you follow this until you come to the Gated FS173 at 108.1 (if I figured your version right). Between 105.7 and 108.1 there is a wide flat area around the trail where you could make your own campsite in many places. Just past 107.3 (cross Little Lost Creek) is a place where a campsite was, but it is gone now.

At 110.4 John Muir Trail head at Childers Creek it is 0.6 miles to Reliance Fly and Tackle which is where I would choose to resupply were I doing so in this area. I would probably try to stay there and get some town food and a shower.

Just south of 113.4 (Big Bend) there is a campsite that is often full of fishermen. But it is free. It is so close to the picnic area I don't list it but maybe I should.

At 114.6 Yowee Creek the BMT crosses Towee Creek and just past Towee Creek there is a good potential campsite there.

117.4 about 0.2 before you cross Wildcat Creek there is a potential campsite on the side of the trail.

I cannot remember the mileage, but after you cross Wildcat Creek there is a small cave on the side of the trail people sometimes camp in.

118.3 - just south of "The Narrows" there is a campsite on the side of the creek without a fire ring unless someone has recently built one.

119.1 Loss Creek there is a great campsite here.

I will say that from 105.4 and 114.6 the walking is super easy except for a short section where you pull up to the FD17 Gate around 109.0 At 114.6 Towee Creek you can take the road walk around to the powerstation and catch a trail that will link back up at Wildcat Falls. It is the old BMT and my preferred route through there. I hate the pull between Towee Creek and Wildcat Creek and we are working on a reroute of that section anyway. If you do the road walk the trail continues to be mostly easy walking until 120.7, otherwise it gets hard for that section I skip and goes back to mostly easy after Wildcat Creek. I'm saying this because if you are worried about needing to stop and camp before wearing yourself out, you may find that you can do a little extra milage above and beyond what you usually do while in this section.

Thanks SGT Rock, that's very helpful! And thanks to everyone for their great advice to all my other questions.

You are right. I have the 2014 guide but was looking at the 2011 when I posted the question.

I'm planning on 90* and high humidity so I'm trying to keep my expected mileage to 10 mpd.

Thanks again for the info. :)

I had a great hike sobo from Unicoi Gap to Thunder Rock campground. It's a beautiful section. It was really hot and humid at the lower elevation, especially along the Hiwassee River but I did okay. I actually didn't mind the area between Towee Creek and Wildcat Creek, the flat walking was much harder for me. There wasn't a breeze for 2 days, the shade was spotty along the Hiwassee, and you hike into Reliance in full sun exposure. It was a great trip and I appreciate all the help.

There's a broken trail sign after you leave Hiwassee River Outfitters. I wasn't sure if it needed to be reported...
