(WBIR - Great Smoky Mountains National Park) - Officials in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park closed several trails and backcountry campsites after a bear encounter that left a teenager hurt.

A 16-year-old boy from Ohio was hurt Saturday night when a bear pulled him from his hammock, park officials said. It happened about 10:30 p.m. at backcountry campsite 84 in the Hazel Creek section of the park. The site is about 4.5 miles from the Fontana Lake shoreline near Hazel Creek on the North Carolina side of the park.

The teen's father drove the bear away. The two then hiked to the shore of the lake. Some campers from backcountry campsite 86 had a boat and transported the two across the lake to Cable Cove boat dock where Graham County (N.C.) Rescue EMS met them. The father and son were then airlifted to Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina around 3 a.m.

Park officials said the teenager received several injuries, including cuts to the head. He never lost consciousness and was in stable condition at last check.

Following the incident, park officials closed Hazel Creek Trail, Jenkins Ridge Trail, Bone Valley Trail, Cold Spring Gap Trail and backcountry campsites 82, 83, 84, 85, 86 and 88 until further notice.

Rangers and wildlife biologists responded to those sites to clear out other campers and evaluate bear activity in the area. They also closed Derrick Knob shelter along the Appalachian Trail until rangers can determine if recent bear activity at the shelter may involve the same bear.

"While incidents with bears are rare, we ask park visitors to take necessary precautions while hiking in bear country and comply with all backcountry closures," said park superintendent Cassius Cash in a press release. "The safety of our visitors is our number one priority."

Park officials say the father and son were on a backpacking trip in the Smokies. They say both were sleeping in hammocks about 10 feet apart and they properly stored their packs, equipment in food with aerial storage cables.

For more information on what to do if you encounter a bear, visit the park website (http://www.nps.gov/grsm/learn/nature/black-bears.htm). If you encounter a bear and need to report an incident, please call (865) 436-1230.

Rangers in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are searching for a missing mother and son.

Details are limited at this time, but officials said the woman, from Wisonsin, and her 16-year-old son, never returned from a hike at Clingman's Dome.

Park officials said the body of another missing hiker, Jenny Bennett of Sylva, North Carolina, was found Monday morning in the Greenbriar area.

It is a bad week for the rangers.

http://www.wbir.com/story/news/2015/06/08/hiker-missing-in-gsmnp/28678953/

(GATLINBURG - WBIR) Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials said at a news conference Monday morning they believe they've located the body of a missing 62-year-old woman.

Earlier Monday morning, Great Smoky Mountains National Park public affairs office confirmed the missing hiker is Jenny Bennett of Sylva, N.C.

Bennett is said to have been hiking near the Greenbrier area of the park. Her last update on her hiking blog, Endless Streams and Forests, was on May 27.

Park officials also said they're searching for a Wisconsin woman and her 16-year-old son. The two are now missing after a hike at Clingmans Dome.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

http://www.wbir.com/story/news/local/2015/06/08/mother--son-missing-after-hike-at-clingmans-dome/28685553/

WBIR) A mother and son who were reported missing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have been found safe.

Christy Barns, 40, and her son, Casey, 16, of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, sent a text message to family members Sunday evening saying they were lost and needed help.

Rangers located their vehicle at Clingman's Dome, and began a ground search Monday morning.

The pair was located along the Forney Creek Trail a little before 2:00 p.m.

Maybe they were going to Andrews Bald and too the wrong turn.

Yah. The snoring one got me (second only to the global warming). I mean, if a bear heard somebody snoring and thought it was another bear would the bear's first impulse be to grab it by the head and drag t into the woods? One would think cuddling would be more likely.

I took my WFR and two recertifications in the Smokies. Another student for all three times was Chuck Hester, one of the park's zoologists. His primary job was hunting, boar eradication from November through April and bear control the rest of the year. He commented on the momma and baby bear that attacked and partially ate a woman day hiker in May of 2000. The woman ran and got caught in brush and had her throat torn open. She weighed more than the two bears combined, since the momma was only 108 pounds (3 pounds were the woman) and the baby was only 30 something pounds. He explained that late May and early June was the "starving time" for bears in the park. No bushes have berries yet. The bears go low because that's where the berries pop first and maybe they can score fish in the streams. The momma bear had a couple of crayfish and 3 pounds of "fresh mammalian mass" in her stomach. They were starving with all winter fat burned off. If the woman had fought, she probably would have survived. But this 2-3 week period usually has unusually hungry and sometimes desperate bears in the lower valleys. Every year. Nothing to do with global warming. Just the cycle of nature.

Are black bear numbers in the smokies even still low? They've been hunted in my state for years after their numbers were back up and they're a huge pest to people in the Shenandoah. No need for a protected status on black bear anymore it seems.
