View Full Version : Map Scale

Howdy. New to the forum and just getting back into backpacking.

My question is about the practical necessity of larger scale maps. I just ordered a National Geographic map and I notice the scale is 1:63k. Back in the day, I preferred the USGA 1:24. My hike is planned for South on the Benton Mackaye out of Thunder Rock. I will also have my phone with Gaia and the tracks for the trail.

Will I miss my 1:24 or are they overkill. I don't plan to stray from the trail.

Thanks.

You don't need larger scale.just pay attention at trail crossings to make sure you're on the right trail.

Who suggests one should enter the woods without a map and compass?Me and Coach Lou did an overnight hike in Harriman State Park this past weekend, camping out near Pine Meadow Lake, a popular day hiking destination. When we got to the trailhead there were about 30 cars already parked, so we knew we'd have some company. Several times during the day we were stopped to ask directions.as no one seem to carry a map. One girl was explaining that her phone app wasn't working because she didn't have service. The last instance was particularly funny, as a young couple hiked towards us and the young lady asked if we were familiar with the Reeves Brook Loop. As there are a number of different Loop possibilities I just smiled and pulled out my map. She explained to me "we know what we're doing" as I pointed out their location and steered them in the right direction
"We know what we're doing we're just lost"

Seriously though when I thru hiked the BMT in 2014 there was quite a bit of blow down and navigation was a bit tricky in spots and I needed to consult my map a few times but never once had to pull out my compass. Even the Wilderness areas where there are no signs or blazes weren't particularly difficult. When I went through again in 2015 with Superman and sheepdog the trails we're pretty free of blow down. Getting Sergeant rocks guidebook is immensely helpful and I would still bring map and compass

sheepdog
2017-10-12, 07:18
I understand the trail crossing signs are much more clear now. In 2015 they were horrible and it got confusing at times trying to figure out what was the BMT and what was the crossing trail.

My National Geographic map arrived today. A nice road map but absolutely worthless for any sort of land navigation by foot. I might use it the next time I take the motorcycle up that way.
