Hope you guys don't mind a newbie with half baked ideas.
What if for Spring/Summer/Fall we could do away with backpack, sleeping bag & shelter ? Just a small satchel for carrying food, firestarter, pot, spoon, map, compass, knife. Hiking clothes = shoes, socks, shorts, fleece top, fleece hat, fleece gloves. To this we add nothing more than the following:
1. Rain poncho / tarp, 2 pegs, 2 short chords.
2. Fleece blanket, 51" x 8' that can be worn as poncho. ( maybe 2 ?)
3. Fleece blanket, 51" x 8' that can be worn as kilt.
4. 72" x 24" x 3/8" blue foam pad
5. 2 Orange Garbage Bags (1 slit at bottom)
All of this rolls up inside the blue foam pad, tied with the 2 short chords. This bedroll is carried at the small of the back. The satchel is carried in front and attaches to bedroll over shoulder and around waist with water bottle on front straps. The whole thing slings over one shoulder or two ?
With 3-4 layers of fleece inside of garbage bags and a bunch of extra forest debris mixed in it might be possible to stay fairly warm down to 32*F under the poncho tarp. Dry stuff in wet spring conditions( birch bark scraps & broken fir boughs? )
Using 100 wt fleece allows multiple layers, 51" x 16' = 3.5 pounds?
Is this the stuff - durable, warm and quick drying when wet ?

Total weight calculation:
Shoes = 20 oz ( light cross-country running shoes )

Plaid Flannel Boxer Shorts = 4 oz ( gotta have a tartan somewhere )
Fleece Top = 10 oz
Hat = 1.5 oz
Gloves = 1.5 oz
==============
Clothes Worn = 3 lbs
Blue Foam Pad = 10 oz
Rain Poncho,pegs,chord = 10 oz
51" x 16' 100wt Fleece = 56 oz
Orange Garbage Bags
Nylon Satchel & 'webbing' straps = 4 oz
==============
Kilt,Poncho,Sleeping,Shelter = 5 lbs
Cone shaped wind screen hobo stove - spreads flat = 5 oz
1QT Aluminum Pot w/ handle - fit down into stove = 4 oz
Spoon = 0.5 oz
Knife = 1.5 oz
Firestarter (magnesium&flint) = 1 oz
1 qt Nalgene + 1 qt PET = 4 oz ( Nalgene for hot drinks on the go ?)
Water treatment Aquamira = 1 oz ( using smaller bottles )
Headlamp Petzl Zipka = 3 oz. ( if cold at night - move ? )
Map, Compass, Watch, Whistle, Duct-tape, First Aid = 4 oz
==============
Cooking & Bushcraft = 1.5 lbs
Food (3 days) = 4.5 pounds ( some food rolled up in bedroll )
Water = 2 pounds
3 pounds worn + 6.5 pounds carried + 6.5 pounds food&water
= 16 pounds (skin out)
p.s. A down vest is probably in order before a second fleece poncho ?
