Recently found out about the newly-formed Friends of The Ouachita Trail (FoOT).

This is an organization founded to help maintain the OT and folks can adopt a section, help in maintenance when they can, or donate to help with maint.

Check it out at: http://www.hikearkansas.com/foot.html

I have joined and adopted a piece in Section 8 (near Hwy 7). Get in on the "ground floor"!

Thanks for checking it out.

Bump, and FoOT has a new website:

http://www.friendsot.org

We are also getting some publicity in the form of a feature article to be run in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Jan 24, 2005. Feelers have been received from Backpacker mag (now that they've gone regional) as well.

If you hike the OT, please help out any way you can.

One of our few shelters was burned to the ground recently, apparently as an act of arson. This was the Nancy Mountain Shelter, between Lake Sylvia and AR Hwy. 9.

Look for more information on the FoOT website mentioned above. FoOT will probably try to rebuild the shelter and efforts are already underway to gather finances to accquire materials.

I hope they figure out who did this before they burn down the replacement.

How long of a drive is it to the west end of the OT from Dallas?

The western terminus of the OT is in Talimena State Park, near Talihina (yes, they are slightly different names - TaliMEna and TaliHIna) in SE Oklahoma.

Yahoo maps (to be taken with a grain of salt) reports this drive to be 4:43 / 225 miles.

Hope that helps.
