Humility is good! Only a few decades ago a large portion of our population lived and worked outdoors and were largely self-sufficient in their abilities and their needs. If they wanted or needed gear they very likely made it themselves. That article is an excellent reminder that little of the outdoor stuff that we pride ourselves on so much today is really new.
