View Full Version : Mt. Katahdin Vertigo

I was looking at the August issue of Backpacker magazine and I noticed a picture on pages 40 and 41 of hikers on the knife edge of Mt. Katahdin in Maine. I think that trail would scare the crap out of me. Does the trail actually follow that ridge in the picture all the way to the left? Is it necessary to hike that trail to say you have done a thru-hike of the AT? I think I could do it if I had to, but I might get a little vertigo.

no, the AT does not go over the Knife Edge so you can through hike the AT without going over the Knife Edge.

I hiked the Knife Edge Trail about four years ago. I was a little nervious at first. But I got over it after walking about 50 feet out. I definately would not do it on a windy day though. The trail is no wider then three feet in some spots.
