Distance Traveled: 0     Total Miles: 0

Location: Amicalola Falls State Park Trail Shelter.

Entry:

Start of my 2 week AT adventure. I made it to the park just like the directions on Expedia.com said, and it was an uneventful trip thankfully. The cool mountain air sure beats the humid nights at Fort Polk, and the little gnat things aren't nearly as bad as Louisiana Skeeters.

I got here and found the shelter without any problems and made a nice Spam and cheese omelet on the alcohol stove - that's a new one! It took 2 eggs, some cheese, and Spam. Cooked all that with only 1/2 ounce alcohol, but could have used 1/4 ounce.

After signing the register, getting the car straight, and doing the dishes; I called Kristi to let her know I made it. But the microphone part of the phone receiver was broken, so I used a make shift Morse code. On the second call she caught on and the simple message was sent. I'll try to make a better call tomorrow from Wesser.

The shelter here is nice, and at 2030 I still have it all to myself. So far there is no sign of vermin here, but there was a huge rat down at the welcome center, and there are signs about bears here - so I'm not taking any chances with food and garbage at all. It's all gone or hanging outside the shelter.

1st Ever self portrait

I also took a self portrait with my tripod (first time). I hope it comes out.

Notes:

There is a $2 entrance fee to the park. At the welcome center is a AT trail register where you can get a long term permit for your car. The window tag from the entrance, and the tag from the register allow you to long term park at the parking lot for as long as it takes to hike. After normal business hours, the $2 fee can be paid at a self serve pay location by the AT trail register.

The Shelter is behind the playground next to the welcome center. It is sort of easy to miss if you don't play close attention to the trail signs behind the welcome center at the start of the approach trail.

Showers, sinks, and toilets are available down by the picnic shelters, which are a short walk from the shelter.
