The Appalachian Trail in this section starts (or finishes) at the summit of Springer Mountain in Georgia. I started in Wesser North Carolina which starts at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Wesser, NC. From there it continues south to Bly Gap which is the dividing point for North Carolina and Georgia. This 58.7 miles of trail in this section of North Carolina, the trail starts at a low of 1,723' in the Nantahala Gorge, and rises to a height of 5,498' on Standing Indian Mountain. It passes such unique features as the stone observation tower on Wayah Bald, the fire towers on Wesser Bald and Albert Mountain, the Nantahala River, and the John Wasilik Memorial Poplar (second largest poplar in the eastern US). Soon after passing Bly Gap, the Appalachian Trail goes into Georgia and finishes the last 75.4 miles of AT. The trail hits a low point of 2,500' at Three Forks, and a highest point of 4,461' on Blood Mountain. It passes interesting points such as Tray Mountain, Cowrock Mountain, Blood Mountain, Long Creek Falls, and Springer Mountain. Most of the vegetation along the trail is very lush, which makes for great viewing of wildlife and plants, but only permits an occasional view off the ridges and mountains into the countryside below. The rare rock balds are things to stop and enjoy when they do present themselves. Water was always easy to find, but nice size creeks for cooling off in were rare in North Carolina, and for much of Georgia. Temperatures where as low as the 50's at night, and never got above the 80's while in the mountains. Trail guides and maps are available at the Appalachian Tail Conference website. Trip plan:
