Peak to Peak Trail and Wilderness Links
Peak to Peak Trail and Wilderness Links

NEWS: 25 2230 NOV 2000

Four updates in one day - gotta be a record! I have finished Lesson 6 and I'm working on Lessons 7, 8, 9, and 10 at the same time. These remaining lessons will have to wait until I get back from the field. They will probably require some outdoor photography in the woods to finish them as well as a lot of map and graphics work. I'll want to take some time and do it correctly.

You'll also noticed a link on the side under AT hike called "North to Katahdin" it's a film from what looks like the '80s about thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. The cool thing is that it is available for viewing on-line at that web address. All you need is Real Player or Windows Media Player. Go check it out.

Uploaded missing pictures to Lesson 2 of the compass navigation lessons. I have  written Lesson 6 and only lack the pictures. I will start on Lesson 7 tonight.

I also have changed the background color because of some suggestions that the text was too hard to read against dark green. If your still getting dark green hit your reload or refresh button.

I have now uploaded lesson 5 of the compass navigation lessons. I hope to make lesson 6 before moving out next week. I realize I have forgotten a couple of pictures on lesson 2, so I'll try and get those up by the end of the day.

NEWS: 25 0010 NOV 2000

I've been burning the midnight oil trying to get some updates done before moving out to the field. As you have seen, so far this weekend I've added links, put some tarp pitches up, finished some compass lessons, and incase you haven't checked them lately - I've re-formatted the packing lists for the equipment section and the AT packing lists.

I have now uploaded lesson 4 of the compass navigation lessons. I hope to make lessons 5 and 6 before moving out next week.

NEWS: 24 1300 NOV 2000

I added pictures to the tarp page except for the Pyramid - I couldn't find a decent site for one, and didn't have a pole long enough. For you Tarpologists out there, send me an e-mail if I missed a favorite pitch, or if you have any cool tarp suggestions. I am going to the field next week so I'll be sure to try any new tarp ideas you may send and give you credit for the ideas.

I've also added some data links on the Links Page. It's stuff like specific gravities for determining the weights of certain fluids; light data so you can figure out when moonrise, sunrise, etc. will occur; and a page that has automatic converts for standard to standard, standard to metric, and metric to metric conversions.

NEWS: 23 2055 NOV 2000

I will add pictures to the tarp page as soon as the weather clears. I have placed it as a special section under equipment just like my stove comparisons. For your tarp experts out there, send me an e-mail if I missed a favorite pitch, or if you have any cool tarp suggestions. I am going to the field next week so I'll be sure to try any new tarp ideas you may send and give you credit for the ideas.

I've also added the missing pictures to my compass page, and finished lesson 3. Lessons are in production as you read this. I'll try to get a bunch of updates completed before Monday because it will be a few weeks after that before I can do any work on the site.

NEWS: 12 1550 NOV 2000

My new back-up server has been uploaded with my site. If you ever have problems getting on, the new back up address is: http://sgtrock.50megs.com/. If you really like coming to the site, but are fed up with site problems that occur from time to time, then bookmark that site as well. I'll keep NBCi as primary server because of less intrusive advertising, and I have gone through a lot of trouble to link with search engines to the NBCi address.

I haven't had much time to do any site updates this weekend since I had to work, but I promise there are things in the works. My plan in order of priority:

1. Tarp set up pictures - Different tarp pitching methods.
2. Compass lesson - Finish lesson 2 pictures for the compass navigation, then finish text for lesson 3.
3. Peak1 Aries tent review - I just have to put it down on html.
4. Lodestone Mountaineering Overlode backpack review - Lodestone went out of business, so I don't know why I would even write the review, but I feel like I should. Lodestone  had some good ideas, maybe you could incorporate them into some home made backpacks.
5. More stove reviews - I want to test my home made Solid fuel stove with Esbit fuel, test the Esbit stove with an outside heat reflector, and I also have some ideas for a simmer ring for the soda can alcohol stove.

I'll start working on this stuff today, but probably won't get far - no sleep in 40 hours, and I have to go to the field next week, so it may be until next weekend before any good solid work.

NEWS: 10 1535 NOV 2000

Stared working on my compass navigation page after uploading my site to the new back-up server. I noticed my pages were all screwed up!

You have probably noticed the new web design. My old design didn't work very well on my back-up server. Their ad-banners made mincemeat of my old set up. Since I was never very happy with it, it gave me a good excuse to try a new design. Hope you like the new lay out.

As soon as I get the new back-up server set up, I'll publish the URL for those of you that really care. I'll probably be fixing broken links for a while since the new format is up.

Also, go try the Excel Documents if you have IE 4.01 or higher. I think I have them working for all IE users even if you don't have Office 2000. Sorry no Netscape fixes yet.

NEWS: 8 1850 NOV 2000

Finally back on the net after two days of a screwed up server. I have set up an alternate server on a Yahoo account, but Yahoo services are very bad.

I'm currently looking for another server to be either my primary web server, or to put a back up site on so that this wont shut me down completely. I have checked out Xoom/NBCi, Yahoo/Geocities, and WebJump. If you have any suggestions for a good free web server (Army guys don't make a lot) please e-mail me.

NEWS: 5 2135 NOV 2000

Finally revised all the equipment pages. Hope it makes it a little easier to read and follow exactly what your after instead of sorting through the entire page.

I've also figured out why the On-Line Excel Spread Sheets aren't working for most of you. Currently they will not work unless you have IE4.01 or higher and Office 2000. I'm working on a fix.

NEWS: 5 1200 NOV 2000

Mel pointed out my sexist intro, so I changed it. Sorry Laidies.

I'm still procrastinating on working on the compass page and scanning photos. In the effort to find something less tedious to do I've started an experiment with on-line Excel spread sheets. Please try it out and give me some feedback.

Some people have reported problems seeing the documents. If you have this problem you may need the Excel viewer.

I've also been thinking about revising the entire equipment page. It just seems cluttered and confused. If you have any suggestions send them in.

NEWS: 4 1700 NOV 2000

I'm procrastinating on working on the compass page and scanning photos - good news is I got the scanner drivers for Windows 2000 and it works now. So I'll end up doing lots of photo scanning as soon as I can find my photo albums again!

I recently updated some more of MY AT hike plan, adding a lightweight packing list and learning to spell Katahdin.

I have included a link to Trail Journals on the links page. Thanks to Sweeper who hooked me up with the site. They just started a new planning forum, so go over there and give it your $.02

For you Trail Talk fans, I've also added a link to Phil's Photo Page.

NEWS: 4 1100 NOV 2000

Started working on some more Compass Page information, but then my wife pointed some errors on the pages already posted. So I did some site clean up for today's big work, probably nothing you would notice right off.

I also started to archive some of the older news stuff to keep this page from taking forever to load.

NEWS: 3 2220 NOV 2000

Had a day off work after pulling duty, so I spent it cleaning up the AT page, making it load a little faster. I also posted my complete planned schedule, as well as updated my packing list, updating the mail drop schedule, and updated the cost estimate.

I also added some info to the compass page. There is still a long way to go with that.

Thanks for the input on the guest book. Please make sure and go there to give me some feedback. I've tried to add everything recommended so far.

All dates are done in military day/time group. Example:

20 1945 OCT 2000

This means 20 (20th day) 1945 (7:45 PM) OCT (October) 2000 (year 2000). Hope this clears up any confusion.
